Wall hugger adjustable bed: what wall glide does and who needs it
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. When people sit up in bed on an adjustable base, a common surprise is that the lamp, phone and water glass end up behind them. That’s the problem a “wall hugger” base solves. Here’s what wall glide is, who it’s worth it for, and how our wall-glide base compares with the bases that don’t have it.
The short answer
- A wall hugger (or wall-glide) base slides back toward the wall as the head rises, so you stay close to your nightstand instead of drifting away from it.
- On a standard base the head section tilts up in place, so the more you sit up, the farther you end up from the wall.
- Our wall-glide base is the Glide (SBKDG2), queen $1,039 today. Its listing says it “glides towards the wall when inclined to keep you within arm’s reach of your nightstand.”
- Worth it if you sit up every night to read, watch TV, work or eat, and reach for the nightstand a lot.
- Skip it if you mostly sleep flat or in zero gravity. The e4 Premium has the same presets and massage for $390 less in queen.
Why a standard base pulls you away from the wall
Picture the bed from the side. When the head section of a standard adjustable base comes up, it pivots in place. Your back goes up with it, but your hips stay where they were, so your shoulders and head move forward, away from the headboard. Push the bed against the wall, sit all the way up, and the nightstand that was right next to your pillow can end up behind your shoulder.
A wall-glide base is built to make up for that. As the head inclines, the base glides back toward the wall, so where you sit stays closer to where you lay down. The Glide’s listing describes it as allowing the base “to glide towards the wall when inclined, keeping you closer to the wall or nightstand,” and notes a structural frame redesign for it. We don’t list a glide distance because the listing doesn’t give one.
Who a wall hugger base is for
| You… | Wall glide? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Read, watch TV or work sitting up most nights | Yes, worth a look | Lamp, phone and charger stay within reach |
| Keep water, glasses or medicine on the nightstand | Yes, worth a look | Less leaning and twisting to reach them |
| Have a small bedroom with the bed against the wall | Helpful | The bed stays closer to the wall as it rises |
| Mostly sleep flat or in zero gravity | Probably not | You rarely sit all the way up, so there’s little drift |
| Want the lowest price for head and foot lift | No | The e3 does head, foot, zero gravity and 3 memory positions for much less |
| Mainly want your head tipped up to a book or screen | Maybe not | Pillow tilt (SBKDT2, e7 Lumbar) does that job; see the reading guide below |

| Full | 75"L x 54"W | $1,019 |
| Queen | 80"L x 60"W | $1,039 |

The split sizes are two Twin XL (or two split cal king) bases side by side. The listing includes connecting straps to keep them from drifting apart without a frame and a sync cable so both sides can move together. Our split king adjustable base guide explains how couples use them.
Setting up a wall hugger base
- Where it goes: the Glide listing says it can be used inside or on top of a bed frame, or as a standalone bed, and its zero-clearance frame is “perfect for platform and storage beds.” Our how to set up an adjustable base guide walks through each option.
- Put the bed near the wall. Wall glide helps the most when the head of the bed is close to the wall and the nightstand is beside your pillow. Leave a little room for the cords behind it.
- Headboards: the Glide listing doesn’t mention headboard brackets. If keeping a headboard matters, read our adjustable base with a headboard guide first, or text John and he’ll check before you order.
- Weight limit: 750 lbs including the mattress and everyone on it, per the listing. See our weight capacity guide.
- The mattress has to bend. Memory foam and most hybrids work; our best mattress for an adjustable base guide has picks.
Wall glide vs pillow tilt
They solve different things. Wall glide keeps you close to the wall and the nightstand as you sit up. Pillow tilt tips the very top of the bed forward so your head comes up to a book or a screen. The SBKDT2 and the e7 Lumbar have pillow tilt; the Glide doesn’t list it. If you can’t decide, our adjustable bed for reading and watching TV guide compares them use by use.

Questions we hear a lot

A base that slides back toward the wall as the head rises, so you stay close to your nightstand when you sit up. Our wall-glide base is the Glide (SBKDG2).
Why does my adjustable bed move away from the nightstand?
On a standard base the head section tilts up in place, so the more you sit up, the farther your head and shoulders end up from the wall. A wall-glide base is designed to make up for that.
