How long does a mattress in a box take to expand?
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Every mattress we sell arrives compressed and rolled in a box, so the question we hear most after “which one?” is “how long until I can sleep on it?” Here’s the honest answer, plus how to unbox it without a mess and what to do if a corner looks flat. Our mattresses are below at today’s prices: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.
The short answer
- You can sleep on it the first night. It’s usable within a few hours of unboxing.
- Full expansion takes up to 72 hours. Most of the rise happens in the first few hours; the last bit of height and edge shape fills in over the next two to three days.
- A light “new” smell for a day or two is normal. Open a window and it fades.
What to expect, hour by hour
Every mattress is a little different, and room temperature makes a big difference. This is the typical pattern, not an exact clock.
| Time after unboxing | What you’ll see | Can you use it? |
|---|---|---|
| First few minutes | It unrolls and starts to take its rectangle shape as air rushes back in | Let it breathe |
| A few hours | Close to its full size; edges and corners still a bit soft or low | Yes, put sheets on and sleep on it |
| 24–72 hours | Reaches its full height and shape; any “new” smell is gone or nearly gone | Yes |
| The first few weeks | The comfort layers break in and your body gets used to the new feel | Yes; give it time before judging the feel |
Before you cut the plastic
- Check the box when FedEx drops it off. If a box is damaged or something is missing, take photos of the box and the product, keep the packaging, and text us within 48 hours. We’ll deal with FedEx for you.
- Make sure it’s the size and model you wanted. A vacuum-compressed mattress can’t be resealed once it’s opened, so check the label first. If anything looks wrong, text John before you open it. Our full terms are on the Purchase Policy & Warranty page.
- Unbox it soon after it arrives, ideally within a few days, rather than leaving it rolled in a garage for weeks.
- Get a second person for a queen or bigger. The box is heavy and awkward on stairs.
How to unbox it, step by step
- Set up the bed frame, foundation or adjustable base first. Unroll the mattress right where it will live; a compressed mattress is much easier to move than an expanded one. Not sure what to put it on? See do you need a box spring?
- Slide the rolled mattress out of the box onto the base, lined up with the head of the bed.
- Cut the outer wrap with scissors, never a box cutter or razor blade, so you can’t nick the cover. Unroll it.
- Cut away the inner plastic, again with scissors, and pull it out from under the mattress.
- Let it breathe. Leave the sheets off for the first hour or two if you can and open a window.
Tips to help it expand
- Keep the room warm. Memory foam softens and recovers faster in a warm room and slower in a cold one.
- Sleep on it. Your body heat helps the foam relax and settle.
- Gently press or crawl around the edges and corners if they look low after the first day.
- Give it the full 72 hours before measuring or deciding something is wrong.
If a corner or edge still hasn’t filled out after about three days in a warm room, text John a couple of photos with your order number. Real defects are covered by the manufacturer’s 10-year limited warranty, and we handle the claim for you.
Does the type of mattress change anything?
All-foam mattresses, like our 10" Rose and 12" Copper, usually look full size within a few hours. Hybrids, like the EcoCore models, spring up fast because the pocket coils push back right away, and the foam on top catches up over the next day or two. Thicker mattresses have more foam to recover, so a 12" or 14" may take a little longer than an 8". Want to compare? See our mattress thickness guide and the gel memory foam vs hybrid guide.

Questions we hear a lot
How long does a mattress in a box take to expand?
Most are usable within a few hours of unboxing and reach their full height and shape within 72 hours. A warm room helps; a cold room slows it down.
Can I sleep on a mattress in a box the first night?
Yes. Once it has had a few hours to breathe, put the sheets on and sleep on it. Your body heat even helps the foam settle.
Is the new mattress smell normal?
A light new smell for a day or two is normal with compressed foam mattresses. Open a window and leave the sheets off for the first hour or two and it fades quickly.
What if my mattress has not fully expanded after 72 hours?
Keep the room warm, sleep on it and gently press around low edges or corners. If it still has not filled out after about three days, text John photos and your order number at 805-617-6878 and we will help, including a warranty claim if it is a defect.
How long can a mattress stay in the box?
Unbox it soon after delivery, ideally within a few days. Foam that stays compressed for a long time can take longer to recover, so it is best not to store it rolled for weeks.
