Mattress sizes and dimensions chart
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Before anyone buys a mattress or an adjustable base, the first question is almost always “Which size do I need?” Here are the standard US mattress sizes in inches and feet, who each one fits best, how split king and cal king really differ from a regular king, and our prices in every size: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.
Mattress size chart
| Size | Inches (W × L) | Feet | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 3'2" × 6'3" | Kids, bunk beds, daybeds |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 3'2" × 6'8" | Dorms, teens and tall single sleepers, one half of a split king |
| Full (double) | 54" × 75" | 4'6" × 6'3" | One adult who wants room to spread out, guest rooms |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 5' × 6'8" | Most couples and most bedrooms, the most popular size |
| King | 76" × 80" | 6'4" × 6'8" | Couples who want space, kids or pets who join you |
| Split king | Two 38" × 80" | 6'4" × 6'8" together | Couples with an adjustable base who want each side to move on its own |
| California king | 72" × 84" | 6' × 7' | Tall sleepers, longer and narrower rooms |
| Split cal king | Two 36" × 84" | 6' × 7' together | Tall couples on an adjustable base |
These are the standard US sizes. A mattress can run up to about an inch smaller or larger depending on the model, and thickness (height) is separate: our mattresses range from 6" to 14" thick.
How to pick the right size
- Sleeping alone? A Twin XL fits a tall single sleeper in a small room. A full gives you 16 more inches of width.
- Sleeping as a couple? A queen gives each of you 30 inches, about the width of a crib mattress. If either of you is a restless sleeper, or a kid or dog joins you at night, a king gives each person 38 inches.
- Over about 6 feet tall? Pick a size that is 80" long (Twin XL, queen, king) or 84" (cal king). A twin and a full are only 75" long, so feet can hang off.
- Check the room. Plan for about 2 feet of walking space on each side and at the foot of the bed, and measure doorways and stairs. A split king is easier to carry in because it arrives as two Twin XL halves.
King vs. California king vs. split king
- King is the widest bed: 76" wide by 80" long.
- California king is 4" narrower and 4" longer (72" × 84"). It is not bigger overall; it is just a different shape for tall sleepers. King and cal king sheets, frames and bases don’t swap with each other.
- Split king is the same 76" × 80" as a king, made from two Twin XL mattresses side by side. It is the way to go with an adjustable base, because each half has its own base and remote. More in our split king guide for couples.

Questions we hear a lot
What are the dimensions of a queen mattress?
A standard queen mattress is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, or 5 feet by 6 feet 8 inches. It is the most popular size for couples.
What is the difference between a king and a California king?
A king is 76 by 80 inches. A California king is 72 by 84 inches: 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer, so it suits taller sleepers. Their sheets, frames and bases are not interchangeable.
Is a split king the same size as a king?
Yes. A split king is two Twin XL mattresses, each 38 by 80 inches, that together make 76 by 80 inches, the same as a king. It is the usual choice with an adjustable base so each side moves on its own.
How much bigger is a Twin XL than a twin?
A Twin XL is the same 38 inch width as a twin but 5 inches longer, 80 inches instead of 75, which is why dorms and taller sleepers use it.
What size mattress is best for a couple?
A queen works for most couples. A king or split king gives each person 38 inches instead of 30, which helps restless sleepers or if kids or pets share the bed. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878.
