How often should you replace your pillow?

Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Most people can tell you roughly how old their mattress is, but almost nobody knows how old their pillow is. A pillow holds your head and neck up every night, and it wears out much faster than a mattress. Here’s how to tell when yours is done, how long different kinds usually last, how to make a good one last longer, and what to replace it with, with today’s prices.

The short answer

How long pillows usually last, by fill

These are rough ranges people commonly use, not a guarantee. How you sleep, how warm you sleep and how you care for the pillow matter more than the calendar.

FillRough rule of thumbHow it wears outOurs with this fill
Polyester fiberfillAbout 1–2 yearsFibers clump and flatten; it stops fluffing back upThe comfort pillows in our Essentials Bedding Bundle (polyfill core)
Kapok & fiber blendCheck yearlyLike any fiber fill, it can pack down if it isn’t fluffedLuxury Resort (40% kapok, 60% 3D fiber)
Shredded memory foamAbout 2–3 yearsPieces compress and clump; loft dropsReactive Shredded, Essentials Memory Foam/Blend
Molded memory foamAbout 2–3 years, often longerSlowly softens; a dent where your head goes that doesn’t fill back inContoured Side Sleeper, Cryo-Chill, Copper, Bamboo Charcoal, Bamboo Charcoal & Cooling Gel, Low Profile, Dual Air-Foam

7 signs it’s time for a new pillow

  1. It stays flat. You press it down and it doesn’t come back, or there’s a permanent dent where your head goes.
  2. You fold it in half or stack two just to get enough height. That usually means it has lost its loft.
  3. It’s lumpy. Fiber or shredded fill has bunched into clumps you can’t shake or fluff out.
  4. It fails the fold test (below).
  5. Stains or a smell that won’t wash out. Pillows soak up sweat and skin oils. If washing the cover doesn’t fix it, the inside is the problem.
  6. You wake up wishing it were higher or lower, or you sleep better on a hotel or guest-room pillow than on your own.
  7. You changed something big: a new mattress, a different sleeping position, or a new adjustable base. Your old pillow height may not fit anymore.

The fold test (and what to do with foam)

Pillow typeHow to test itTime to replace if…
Fiber or kapokFold it in half, let goIt stays folded instead of springing open
Shredded foamShake it out and fluff it, then look at the shapeThe fill stays in hard clumps or it’s noticeably lower than when new
Molded memory foamPress your hand in for a few seconds, then liftIt doesn’t slowly fill back in, or there’s a dent, crack or crumbling foam under the cover

Don’t fold a solid memory foam pillow hard to test it; just press and watch it recover.

Wear vs warranty: what’s covered

Per our Purchase Policy & Warranty, pillows carry a 3-year limited warranty (the Dual Air models carry 1 year), and pillow protectors carry 5 years. The pillow listings say the pillow is guaranteed to return to its original shape or be replaced, and damage from improper care or handling isn’t covered. So if a pillow you bought from us goes flat well before you’d expect, text John your order number and a few photos before you throw it out.

Questions we hear a lot

How often should you replace your pillow?

There is no fixed date. As a rough rule of thumb, check your pillow every year or two: polyester fiberfill pillows tend to flatten soonest, and good memory foam pillows usually hold their shape longer. Replace it when it stays flat or lumpy, fails the fold test, or has stains or a smell that washing the cover does not fix.

What is the pillow fold test?

For fiber or kapok pillows, fold the pillow in half and let go. If it stays folded instead of springing open, it has lost its loft. For memory foam, press your hand in and lift; if it does not slowly fill back in, or you see a dent or crumbling foam, it is worn out.

How can I make my pillow last longer?

Use a pillow protector from day one, wash the zip-off cover rather than the foam inside, fluff fiber and shredded pillows when you make the bed, and choose the right height so you are not folding or stacking it every night.

Does the warranty cover a pillow that goes flat?

Our pillows carry a 3-year limited warranty (1 year on the Dual Air models). The listings say the pillow is guaranteed to return to its original shape or be replaced; damage from improper care or handling is not covered. If a pillow from us flattens early, text John your order number and a few photos.

Should I get a new pillow with a new mattress?

Not always, but it is a good time to check. How far you sink into a mattress changes how high a pillow you need, so a side sleeper moving to a softer mattress may want a little less height, and someone moving to a firmer one may want a little more.
