How long does a mattress last, and when should you replace it?
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. A lot of the people who call us aren’t sure whether they need a new mattress or just a better night’s sleep. Here’s the honest answer: how long most mattresses last, the signs it’s time, how to make a new one last longer, and what to do with the old one. Our mattresses are below at today’s prices: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.
The short answer
- Most mattresses last about 7 to 10 years. That’s a common rule of thumb, not a hard limit. How you sleep, how much weight the bed carries and what it sits on all change it.
- Replace it when it stops supporting you, not on a set date: a visible dip, waking up stiff, or sleeping better anywhere else are the real signals.
- Past 7 years and not sleeping well? It’s worth a close look even if it seems fine.
How long each type of mattress usually lasts
These are rough ranges for a bed used every night. Treat them as a starting point, not a promise.
| Type | Typical life | What usually wears out first |
|---|---|---|
| Memory foam | About 7–10 years | Comfort foam softens and holds body impressions |
| Hybrid (foam over pocket coils) | About 7–10 years | Top foam layers; the coils usually outlast them |
| Traditional innerspring | About 5–8 years | Springs lose tension, edges sag, it gets noisy |
| Thin or guest-room mattress (6"–8") | Depends on use | Less foam to wear through if used nightly; lasts for years in a guest room |
Heavier sleepers and couples put more load on a bed, so it may wear sooner. A thicker, firmer support core or pocket coils hold up better under more weight; see our mattress thickness guide.
Signs it’s time for a new mattress
- A dip or body impression you can see. Lay a broom handle or straightedge across the bed; a gap where you sleep means the foam or springs have given out.
- You wake up stiff or sore, and it eases once you’ve been up a while.
- You sleep better on a hotel bed, a guest bed or the couch.
- You and your partner roll toward the middle.
- Lumps, sagging edges or squeaky springs.
- More sneezing or stuffiness in bed. Older mattresses collect dust and allergens over the years.
- Your needs changed: a new partner, a new sleeping position, back trouble, or you want an adjustable base and your old innerspring won’t bend with it.
If the mattress is fine but you still wake up sore, the problem may be the support underneath or your pillow. Our adjustable base for back pain guide covers what helps. This is general comfort guidance, not medical advice; see a doctor for ongoing pain.
How to make a new mattress last longer
- Give it solid, even support. Use a foundation, a platform with closely spaced slats, or an adjustable base. An old, sagging box spring will wear out a new mattress fast. Not sure what you need? See do you need a box spring?
- Use a mattress protector from day one. Spills and sweat break foam down, and stains can affect a warranty claim.
- Rotate it head to foot every few months for the first year, then a couple of times a year, so you don’t always sleep in the same spot. Most foam mattresses are one-sided, so rotate them instead of flipping. A two-sided mattress like our 12" iSwitch is made to flip.
- Don’t let kids jump on it, and try not to sit on the same edge every day.
- Let it breathe. Strip the sheets now and then and keep the room dry.
What the warranty covers
Every mattress we sell comes with the manufacturer’s 10-year limited warranty for manufacturer defects. Normal softening as foam breaks in isn’t a defect, and a warranty isn’t the same thing as how long a mattress will feel its best. Keep your order number and use a protector so a claim is easy if you ever need one. Details are on our Purchase Policy & Warranty page.
What to do with your old mattress
Check with your city’s bulk-item pickup first; many offer it free or for a small fee. In California and a few other states, the Bye Bye Mattress program lists drop-off sites that take mattresses for recycling. A mattress in good shape can go to a guest room, a kid’s room or a local charity that accepts them.

Questions we hear a lot
How long does a mattress last?
Most memory foam and hybrid mattresses last about 7 to 10 years with nightly use, and traditional innerspring mattresses often a bit less. It is a rule of thumb: body weight, how many people share the bed and the support underneath all change it.
How do I know when to replace my mattress?
Look for a visible dip or body impression, waking up stiff or sore, sleeping better on other beds, rolling toward the middle with your partner, lumps or noisy springs. If your mattress is 7 or more years old and you are not sleeping well, it is worth replacing.
Should I flip or rotate my mattress?
Rotate it head to foot every few months. Most modern foam and hybrid mattresses are one-sided and should not be flipped. Two-sided mattresses, like our 12 inch iSwitch, are made to flip.
Does a mattress warranty mean it lasts 10 years?
No. A 10-year limited warranty covers manufacturer defects. Normal softening and comfort changes over time are not defects, so a warranty is not a promise of how long a mattress will feel its best.
Can a bad foundation wear out a mattress faster?
Yes. A sagging box spring, or slats spaced too far apart, lets the mattress dip and wear unevenly. A solid foundation, a platform with closely spaced slats or an adjustable base gives even support. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878.
