Full vs queen mattress: which size is right for you?

Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Full or queen is the size question we hear most from people moving out of a twin, setting up a guest room, or buying a first bed for two. The difference looks small on paper, 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer, but it matters a lot once two people (or one tall person) are in the bed. Here’s a plain comparison, plus our mattresses in both sizes at today’s prices: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.

The short answer

Can two people sleep on a full?

They can, but it’s snug. A full gives each person about 27 inches, a little narrower than a crib mattress. That works for some couples who sleep close and still, and for short stays in a guest room. For most couples sleeping together every night, a queen’s extra 6 inches of width and 5 inches of length make a real difference. If you both want even more room, see our queen vs king guide.

Tall sleepers: watch the length

A full is only 75" long, the same length as a twin. If you’re around 6 feet or taller, your feet can end up at the edge, especially once a pillow takes up the top few inches. A queen is 80" long, like a Twin XL and a king. Tall and sleeping alone in a small room? A Twin XL is also 80" long and takes less floor space than a full.

Will it fit your room?

Plan for about 2 feet of walking space on each side and at the foot of the bed, plus room for nightstands. A rough rule:

Every bed we sell ships brand new and factory-sealed in a box, so it fits through doorways and up stairs easily, and it’s how we keep prices low.

Price, sheets and frames

A full usually costs a little less than a queen in the same model, and you can compare both sizes in the table below. Queen sheets are the easiest to find in every style; full sheets are common too. Frames, headboards and adjustable bases have to match the mattress size, so a full mattress needs a full frame or base, and a queen needs a queen.

Questions we hear a lot

What is the difference between a full and a queen mattress?

A full (also called a double) is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. A queen is 60 by 80 inches, so it is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer.

Can two adults sleep on a full mattress?

Yes, but it is snug. Each person gets about 27 inches of width, a little narrower than a crib mattress. Most couples who share a bed every night are more comfortable on a queen, which gives each person about 30 inches.

Is a full mattress long enough for a tall person?

A full is 75 inches long, the same as a twin, so people around 6 feet or taller may find their feet near the edge. A queen, Twin XL and king are all 80 inches long.

What room size do you need for a full or a queen?

As a rough rule, a full fits comfortably in a room around 9 by 10 feet, and a queen in a room around 10 by 10 feet, leaving about 2 feet of walking space on each side and at the foot.

Is a double bed the same as a full?

Yes. Double and full are two names for the same 54 by 75 inch size. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878.
