Twin XL adjustable base & mattress for college dorms and small rooms
Every August our phone lights up with parents asking the same thing: “What fits a dorm bed, and will it get there before move-in?” We’re John and Mimi, and we’ve helped a lot of families with this. Here is everything we tell them, with today’s Twin XL prices.
Why Twin XL?
A Twin XL is 38" wide and 80" long, the same width as a regular twin but five inches longer. Nearly every college dorm uses Twin XL beds, because it fits a grown adult of almost any height in a narrow room. It is also a great size for a small bedroom, a teen who shot up over the summer, a guest room or a studio. A regular twin (75" long) will leave a tall student’s feet hanging off the end, so double-check the size on the housing website before you buy.
One bonus most families don’t think about: two Twin XLs side by side make a king. If your student later moves into a bigger place, or you want the base back at home, a second Twin XL turns it into a split king where each person controls their own side.
Can you use an adjustable base in a dorm?
Often yes, but check first. Many dorms provide a bed frame that has to stay, and some housing offices have rules about extra furniture. Our bases are zero clearance, so they can sit right on top of a solid platform or a lofted bed’s deck, or stand on their own legs (3", 6", 9" or 12") in an apartment or small bedroom. You will need a nearby outlet. Sitting up to study in bed, without a pile of pillows, is the thing students thank their parents for.
For small rooms at home, taller legs leave room for storage bins under the bed, and the bases fold in half for shipping, so they go up narrow stairs easily.

Twin XL mattresses that ship in a box
Every mattress here arrives compressed and rolled in a box that one person can carry up to a third-floor room. Unbox it on the bed, cut the plastic with scissors, and it is ready to sleep on that night. It will keep filling out for a day or two.

All of these flex with an adjustable base. A thinner 8" or 10" mattress also keeps a lofted dorm bed lower, which matters if the room has a guard rail. Most lofts want the mattress below the top of the rail.
Save with a package
A Bronze sleep system package pairs a base and a mattress in Twin XL for less than buying them separately. And don’t forget Twin XL sheets: regular twin sheets are five inches too short. Our bamboo & cotton sheet set comes in Twin XL and stays put on an adjustable base.
Timing for move-in day
Orders usually ship within one business day, and most arrive about three business days later by FedEx, free. For move-in we suggest ordering about two weeks ahead and shipping it home, or to the student’s mailing address if the school accepts packages. Check the school’s package rules first; some mailrooms won’t hold big boxes. Text John if you are cutting it close and he will tell you honestly whether it will make it.
Questions we hear a lot
What size bed is in a college dorm?
Almost all college dorms use Twin XL beds: 38 inches wide and 80 inches long. Check your school housing website to be sure. A regular twin is 5 inches shorter.
Can I put an adjustable base in a dorm room?
Often, yes. Our bases are zero clearance, so they can sit on a solid platform or stand on their own legs, and they need a nearby outlet. Many dorms require their own bed frame to stay in the room, so check the housing rules first.
Will a Twin XL mattress fit a regular twin frame?
No. A Twin XL is 5 inches longer than a twin, so it will hang off a twin frame. Twin XL sheets are also longer than twin sheets.
How thick should a dorm mattress be?
Eight to ten inches is the sweet spot for most dorms, especially lofted beds with a guard rail. Twelve inches is more plush if the bed is not lofted.
How long does shipping take?
Orders usually ship within 1 business day and most arrive about 3 business days later by FedEx, with free shipping. For move-in day, order about two weeks ahead. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878.
