Twin XL vs full mattress: which one should you buy?
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. “Should I get a Twin XL or a full?” comes up all the time from college students, people setting up a first apartment, and parents buying for a teen who keeps growing. One is longer, the other is wider, and the right pick depends on how tall you are, how much floor you have and whether anyone else will share the bed. Here’s the plain comparison, plus our mattresses and adjustable bases in both sizes at today’s prices.
The short answer
- Twin XL is 38" × 80". Narrow and long: the same length as a queen or king.
- Full is 54" × 75". 16" wider, but 5" shorter, the same length as a regular twin.
- Pick a Twin XL if you’re around 6 feet or taller, it’s for a dorm, the room is narrow, or you may want two of them to make a split king later.
- Pick a full if you sleep alone, like room to spread out, are under about 6 feet, and the room can spare the extra width. It’s also the better pick for a guest room where two people might stay a night or two.
- Two adults every night? Neither is ideal. A full gives each of you about 27"; a queen is usually the better buy. See full vs queen.
Twin XL vs full dimensions
| Size | Inches (W × L) | Feet | Sleeping surface | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 3'2" × 6'8" | 3,040 sq in | Tall single sleepers, dorms, narrow rooms, adjustable bases |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 4'6" × 6'3" | 4,050 sq in | Single sleepers who sprawl, first apartments, guest rooms |
| Queen (for reference) | 60" × 80" | 5' × 6'8" | 4,800 sq in | Couples, or one person who wants width and length |
A full has about a third more sleeping surface than a Twin XL, all of it in width. The Twin XL wins on length only. Every size from twin to California king is in our mattress size chart.
Height: the deciding question for most people
Once a pillow takes up the top few inches, a 75" full leaves someone around 6 feet tall with their feet near the edge. A Twin XL is 80" long, the same as a queen, so it fits almost any adult. If you’re tall and sleep alone, that extra length matters more than width. If you’re under about 6 feet, the full’s length is fine and the extra 16" of width is the better deal. These heights are a rule of thumb; if you’re close, lie on your current bed with your pillow and measure how much room is left at your feet.
How much room does each one need?
A common rule of thumb is about 2 feet of walking space on each side and at the foot of the bed. With that much clearance:
- Twin XL: roughly 7'2" wide × 8'8" long of floor (38" + 4' across, 80" + 2' long).
- Full: roughly 8'6" wide × 8'3" long (54" + 4' across, 75" + 2' long).
- Pushed against a wall (common in dorms and small rooms), you save about 2 feet of width with either one.
So the Twin XL is the one for a narrow room, and the full fits a room that is wider than it is long. Measure doorways and stairs too; both sizes are compressed and rolled in a box for shipping, so getting them into the room is rarely the problem. More on that in how long a mattress in a box takes to expand.
Who should get a Twin XL?
- College students. Nearly every dorm uses Twin XL beds. Check the housing website first. See our Twin XL dorm and small room guide.
- Tall teens and single adults in a smaller room.
- Anyone who wants an adjustable base on a narrow footprint. A Twin XL base lets you sit up to read, study or watch TV.
- Planning ahead. Two Twin XLs side by side are 76" × 80", the size of a king. That’s how a split king works, so a Twin XL mattress and base can become one half of a split king later. See our split king guide.
Who should get a full?
- Single sleepers who move around or sleep with a pet. The extra 16" of width is real elbow room.
- A first apartment or small bedroom where you want a “grown-up” bed without the footprint of a queen. Our best full size mattress guide has picks.
- Guest rooms where a couple might stay for a weekend. See best mattress for a guest room.
- Kids who sprawl. A full is a good step up from a twin for a child; our best mattress for kids guide covers sizes by age.
Sheets, frames and adjustable bases
- Sheets and protectors don’t cross over. A Twin XL sheet is far too narrow for a full, and a full sheet is short and baggy on a Twin XL. Our sheets and mattress protectors come in both sizes; see do you need a mattress protector.
- Frames must match. Buy the frame for your exact size. What a foam mattress can sit on is in what to put under a memory foam mattress.
- Adjustable bases come in both. Our e3, e4, SBKDH, Glide and other bases are made in Twin XL and full; match the base to the mattress size.

Questions we hear a lot
What is the difference between a Twin XL and a full?
A Twin XL is 38 inches wide and 80 inches long. A full is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long, so a full is 16 inches wider and a Twin XL is 5 inches longer.
Is a Twin XL or a full better for a tall person?
A Twin XL. It is 80 inches long, the same as a queen, while a full is 75 inches. As a rule of thumb, people around 6 feet or taller often feel their feet near the edge of a full once a pillow is on the bed.
Can two people sleep on a full?
For a night or two, yes, but a full gives each person only about 27 inches. Couples who share a bed every night are usually happier on a queen or larger. A Twin XL is a one-person bed.
Do Twin XL sheets fit a full mattress?
No. Twin XL sheets are 16 inches too narrow for a full, and full sheets are too short and loose on a Twin XL. Buy sheets and protectors made for your exact size.
Which takes less space, a Twin XL or a full?
A Twin XL is 16 inches narrower but 5 inches longer, so it fits a narrow room better. A full suits a room that is wider than it is long. Questions? Text John at 818-924-3744.
