Best mattress for couples
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. We’ve shared a bed for years (plus Peanut, most nights), so we know a couples mattress has to do more than feel good to one person. It has to keep you from waking each other up, give you both enough room, and land on a feel you can both live with. Here’s how to choose, with our mattresses at today’s prices: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.
The short answer
- If one of you tosses and turns, pick memory foam or a pocket-coil hybrid. Both cut down on the motion you feel from your partner, unlike an old-style innerspring.
- If you can’t agree on firmness, medium firm is the safest middle. If you truly want different feels, a split king lets each of you choose your own mattress.
- Get at least a queen. A full gives each of you only about 27 inches. A king gives you about 38 inches each.
- If one of you sleeps hot, look for gel or copper-gel foam, or a hybrid with coils for airflow.
What matters most when two people share a bed
- Motion isolation. Memory foam absorbs movement instead of passing it across the bed, and individually wrapped pocket coils move on their own instead of as one connected spring unit. Either one helps if you get up at different times.
- Edge support. Couples use more of the mattress, right out to the sides. A firm edge keeps you from feeling like you’ll roll off and gives you a steady place to sit and put on shoes. Several of our mattresses have a reinforced edge support system.
- A feel you can both live with. Side sleepers usually like a bit softer; back and stomach sleepers usually like firmer. Medium firm suits the widest range of sleepers. Our mattress firmness guide explains the scale.
- Temperature. Two people make more heat than one. Gel and copper-gel foams and hybrid coils help it escape. See gel memory foam vs hybrid for hot sleepers.
- Noise. All-foam mattresses have no springs to squeak, and wrapped pocket coils are much quieter than an old innerspring.
How much room do you each get?
| Size | Inches (W × L) | Width per person | Good for couples? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full | 54" × 75" | About 27" | Snug; fine for guest rooms, tight every night |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | About 30" | The most popular couples size |
| King | 76" × 80" | About 38" | Best if you like space, or kids and pets join you |
| California king | 72" × 84" | About 36" | For taller couples who want extra length |
| Split king | Two 38" × 80" Twin XLs | 38" each, your own mattress | Best when you want different feels or positions |

Our picks for couples
| If you… | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wake each other up | 12" Copper Gel | Memory foam layer that limits motion transfer, edge support, medium firm for back and side sleepers |
| Want bounce and airflow | 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium | Edge-to-edge pocket coils for less motion transfer, patented edge support, cooling gel layer |
| Like it softer, or one of you is heavier | 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid | Medium-soft reactive foam with bounce-back over 8" foam-encased pocket coils, zoned support, edge support |
| Haven’t settled on soft vs firm | 12" iSwitch Flippable | Medium firm on one side, medium soft on the other; flip it to try both |
| Want the best value | 10" Rose Medium | Medium-firm gel memory foam that suits most adults at our lowest everyday price |
One honest note on the iSwitch: flipping changes the feel for the whole mattress, so you both sleep on the same side. It’s great for couples who want to try both feels; if you know you want different ones, a split king is the better answer.
When a split king makes sense
A split king is two Twin XL mattresses side by side, usually on two Twin XL adjustable bases. Together it’s the same size as a king, but each of you picks your own mattress and, with adjustable bases, your own position and remote. One of you can read sitting up or sleep in zero gravity while the other stays flat. It’s also the cleanest way to stop feeling your partner move, because the two halves are separate. Questions we hear a lot
What type of mattress is best for couples?
Memory foam or a pocket-coil hybrid. Memory foam absorbs movement, and individually wrapped pocket coils move on their own, so both cut down on feeling your partner toss and turn compared with an old-style innerspring.
What firmness is best for couples?
Medium firm suits the widest range of sleepers, so it is the usual compromise. If one of you clearly wants soft and the other firm, a split king lets each of you choose your own Twin XL mattress.
Is a queen big enough for two people?
For most couples, yes. A queen is 60 by 80 inches, about 30 inches per person. If you like more room, or kids and pets join you, a king gives each of you about 38 inches.
What is a split king?
Two Twin XL mattresses side by side, usually on two Twin XL adjustable bases. Together they are the size of a king, but each person picks their own mattress and, with adjustable bases, their own position and remote.
What mattress is best if one of us sleeps hot?
Look for gel or copper-gel memory foam, or a hybrid with pocket coils that let air move through. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878 and he will help you pick.
