What is mattress edge support (and does it matter)?
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. “Patented edge support” shows up on a lot of our product pages, and it’s fair to ask what it actually means and whether you should pay attention to it. Here’s a plain explanation, who it matters for, how to check an edge yourself, and exactly which of our mattresses list it, in the listing’s own words, with today’s prices.
The short answer
- Edge support is a firmer, reinforced border built around the sides of a mattress, so the edge holds its shape when you sit on it or sleep near it instead of sinking and sloping toward the floor.
- It matters most if you sit on the side of the bed to get dressed or get up, share the bed and use the full width, sleep near the edge, have a dog that jumps up, or have a smaller bed where every inch counts.
- It matters less if you sleep alone in the middle and rarely sit on the bed.
- Today 16 of the mattresses we have in stock name edge support in their listings, including every hybrid we sell. The lowest queen price among them right now is the 12" Copper Gel at $519.
What edge support is
The middle of a mattress gets support from everything around it. The outer few inches don’t: there’s nothing past the side to hold them up, so on a mattress with no reinforcement the edge usually gives more than the center. Edge support is the manufacturer’s fix for that: a firmer border (often denser foam) running around the sides, or, in many hybrids, a foam surround that the coils sit inside.
Every brand builds it a little differently, and our listings don’t give the material, density or width of the edge system. What they do say is quoted in the table below. Two of them show it only as a line in the layer list, with no more detail: the 12" Copper Gel (“Edge Support”) and the 12" Lavender Firm (“1.5" Edge Support”). The others name a patented edge support system (or “Edge Support technology” on the 12" Gel Plush) and say what it does.
Does edge support matter? Who it’s for
- You sit on the side of the bed. Putting on socks and shoes, or sitting a moment before you stand up. A soft edge can feel like it’s tipping you forward. See best mattress for seniors and aging in place.
- You share the bed. Two people use more of the width, so one of you usually ends up near a side. See best mattress for couples.
- You’re heavier, or your partner is. More weight on a small area near the side is exactly what a reinforced edge is built for. See best mattress for heavy people.
- Your dog sleeps on the edge or jumps on and off. See best mattress for dog and pet owners.
- Smaller beds. On a full or twin, the edges are a bigger share of the bed, so a usable edge counts for more. See best full size mattress.
- Guest and rental beds. Guests sit on the bed to unpack and put on shoes. See best mattress for Airbnb and vacation rentals.
When it matters less: if you sleep alone, stay in the middle and almost never sit on the bed, feel and support in the middle of the mattress matter more. Pick by sleeping position and firmness first; see the mattress firmness guide.
What “20% more sleeping surface” means
Most of our listings that name the Patented Edge Support System add “20% more sleeping surface.” That is the manufacturer’s wording, and we haven’t measured it ourselves. It doesn’t mean the mattress is bigger: a queen is still a queen (60" x 80"). We read it as meaning that more of the surface out toward the sides stays firm enough to lie on, instead of being a soft strip you avoid. Treat it as a description, not a measurement.
Memory foam vs hybrid edges
- Hybrids. All eight of our hybrids list a patented edge support system. Five of them (the 14" Allureluxe Classic, both Sofinity hybrids, the 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid and the 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel) list foam-encased coils, meaning the coil layer sits inside a foam surround. Three (the 10" and 12" EcoCore hybrids and the 10" Allureluxe) list “edge-to-edge pocketed coils”: that describes coils running across the full width, and those three list the edge support system as well. More in our best hybrid mattress guide.
- All-foam. An all-foam mattress can have a good edge too. Of ours, the 12" Copper Gel, 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel (medium firm), 12" Lavender Firm, 12" Gel Plush, 10" and 12" ActiveAlign, and both 12" iSwitch flippables list it. Softer foam generally gives more at the edge, so a plush all-foam mattress without a listed edge system will usually feel softer at the sides than in the middle. See memory foam vs hybrid.
How to check a mattress edge yourself
There’s no standard edge rating, so the best test is your own. Once your mattress has fully expanded:
- Sit test. Sit right on the side, where you’d put on shoes, then in the middle of the side. Do you feel steady, or like you’re sliding forward?
- Lie-near-the-edge test. Lie on your back with your shoulder a hand’s width from the side. Do you feel like you might roll off?
- Press test. Press down near the corner and near the middle of the side with the same hand pressure, and compare how far each one sinks.
- Check what’s underneath. A sagging frame rail or wide-spaced slats can make any edge feel weak. The mattress listings in the table below ask for “a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than two (2) inches apart.” See what to put under a memory foam mattress.
New foam can feel firmer for the first few weeks; our break-in guide explains what changes and what doesn’t.

Keeping the edge in good shape
- Rotate it. Every mattress listing in the table above says to “rotate your mattress to give uniform wear to the sleeping surface,” which also moves the spot where you usually sit.
- Don’t stand on it. The same listings say “Do not stand or jump on the mattress,” and that includes standing on the edge to reach a shelf.
- Give it solid support. Use a frame, foundation or base that meets the listing’s support rule above. For frames, see how to choose a bed frame.
- Know what the warranty covers. Our mattress warranty guide explains the 10-year limited mattress warranty and what it does and doesn’t include.

Questions we hear a lot
What is edge support on a mattress?
A firmer, reinforced border around the sides of a mattress, often denser foam or, in many hybrids, a foam surround the coils sit inside. It helps the edge hold its shape when you sit on it or sleep near it, instead of sinking toward the floor. Each brand builds it differently; on our site, the product listing says whether a mattress has it.
Does edge support matter?
It matters most if you sit on the side of the bed to dress or get up, share the bed, sleep near the edge, are a heavier sleeper, have a dog that jumps up, or have a smaller bed like a full or twin. If you sleep alone in the middle and rarely sit on the bed, firmness and feel matter more.
Do memory foam mattresses have edge support?
Some do. Of the all-foam mattresses we sell, the 12" Copper Gel, 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel (medium firm), 12" Lavender Firm, 12" Gel Plush, 10" and 12" ActiveAlign and both 12" iSwitch flippables list edge support in their product listings. Softer foam without a listed edge system usually gives more at the sides.
Are hybrid mattresses better for edge support?
Hybrids often feel steadier at the edge because of the coils, and many surround the coils with foam. All eight of our hybrids list a patented edge support system, but several of our all-foam mattresses list one too, so check the listing rather than the mattress type alone.
What does "20% more sleeping surface" mean?
It is the manufacturer’s wording in many of our listings for the patented edge support system, and we have not measured it ourselves. The mattress is not bigger, since a queen is still 60" x 80". We read it as more of the surface toward the sides staying firm enough to lie on.
