Best mattress for motion isolation (when your partner tosses and turns)
Hi, we’re John and Mimi, and one of us moves a lot more than the other, so we get this question all the time: how do you stop feeling your partner every time they roll over? Here’s what “motion isolation” means, what actually helps, and exactly which of our mattresses say something about it in their listings, in the listing’s own words, with today’s prices.
The short answer
- Two things are generally credited with calming movement across the bed: memory foam (it absorbs movement instead of passing it along) and pocketed coils, where each small spring is wrapped on its own so it moves on its own instead of as one connected unit.
- Today 6 of the mattresses we have in stock name it in their listings: the 12" Copper Gel (all foam) and 5 hybrids with pocketed coils. The lowest queen price among them right now is the 12" Copper Gel at $519. The lowest-priced hybrid is the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium at $619 in a queen.
- The biggest fix isn’t always the mattress. A wider bed gives each of you more room, and a split king (two Twin XL mattresses side by side) means your partner is on a different mattress altogether.
- We have no lab numbers. Our listings don’t include motion test results or a rating, so we can only tell you what the listings say and what’s generally true about foam and coils.
What motion isolation means
It’s how much of one person’s movement you feel on the other side of the bed: a partner rolling over, getting up early, or climbing in late. On a bed that passes motion along, a small move on one side becomes a wobble on the other. On a bed that absorbs it, the movement stays mostly where it started.
There is no standard motion rating on mattress listings, and the numbers some sites publish come from their own tests, so we don’t quote any. What we can do is read you what each of our product pages says, and explain why those materials are used.
Memory foam vs pocketed coils
- Memory foam. Foam compresses where the weight is and doesn’t push much of that movement sideways, which is why foam is the usual answer for light sleepers. It’s also what our best mattress for couples and memory foam vs hybrid guides lead with. Of our all-foam models, the 12" Copper Gel is the one whose listing names it: a 1" memory foam layer is described as preventing motion transfer.
- Pocketed coils. A hybrid adds a layer of coils under the foam. In an old-style innerspring the coils are linked together, so they tend to pass movement across the bed; in a pocketed coil each spring is wrapped separately. The hybrids in the table below say in their listings that the coils reduce motion transfer, and we quote them. Hybrids generally feel bouncier than all foam, which some people like and some find less quiet. We compare the two in hybrid vs innerspring and best hybrid mattress.
- Which is “better”? The general rule, which our foam vs hybrid guide repeats, is that foam gives the least motion and hybrids with pocketed coils keep it low while adding bounce and airflow. We haven’t measured either, so choose by feel too.
Which of our mattresses name motion transfer
Every mattress we have in stock today whose product listing mentions motion transfer, sorted by today’s queen price. The quote is the listing’s own wording. “Sold out today” means that size isn’t available right now; “not offered” means the mattress doesn’t come in that size.

More room helps as much as the mattress
The wider the bed, the farther your partner is from you, and the less each move is felt. Here is how much width each person gets on a standard bed, by simple division of the bed’s width in inches:
| Size | Width | Per person (two sleepers) |
|---|---|---|
| Full | 54" | 27" |
| Queen | 60" | 30" |
| California king | 72" | 36" |
| King | 76" | 38" |
| Split king | Two 38" Twin XL mattresses | 38" each, and a separate mattress |
A king gives each person 8" more than a queen, as our queen vs king and best king size mattress guides explain. The mattress size chart has every size in feet and inches, and how to measure for a mattress has the room-clearance table.
The most reliable fix: a split king
A split king is two Twin XL mattresses (each 38" × 80") side by side, the same footprint as a king. Because your partner is on a different mattress, a restless sleeper or an early riser bothers the other person much less; that’s the point we make in our split king guide. It also lets you each choose your own firmness, and it works with a split king adjustable base so each side can move on its own.
The trade-offs: two mattresses can leave a seam down the middle, you’ll need split king or two Twin XL fitted sheets (see best sheets for an adjustable bed), and a split king usually costs more than the same model in a king, so compare the two prices. Today the 12" Copper Gel is $659 in a king and $789 in a split king.
What else affects how much you feel
- What’s under the mattress. The mattress listings ask for a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2 inches apart. A frame that creaks or wobbles can make movement more noticeable, which is a general point rather than something our listings measure. See how to choose a bed frame and what to put under a memory foam mattress.
- A steady edge. If the edge gives way, you tend to slide toward the middle and end up closer to your partner. Every hybrid we sell lists edge support; see mattress edge support explained.
- Weight and position. A heavier partner presses down more, and a partner who changes position all night moves more than one who doesn’t. Our heavy sleepers guide and combination sleepers guide go into each.
- Other reasons you wake up. A big difference in firmness or temperature between you two is a bigger reason to wake up than motion. See best cooling mattress if one of you sleeps warm.
How to test it, and why you should ask first
A common informal test is to put a glass of water on one side of the mattress and have someone roll or climb in beside it. That works in a showroom. So ask us first: tell John how you each sleep and he’ll tell you honestly which model he’d pick. Once yours arrives, give it up to 72 hours to expand fully; our break-in guide explains what changes in the first weeks.

Questions we hear a lot
What is the best mattress for motion isolation?
Our listings that name motion transfer are the 12 inch Copper Gel (all foam, a 1 inch memory foam layer described as preventing motion transfer) and five hybrids with pocketed coils: the 10 inch EcoCore Hybrid Premium, 12 inch EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe, both 12 inch Sofinity hybrids and the 14 inch Allureluxe Classic. The Copper Gel is the lowest priced. We have no lab test numbers, so choose by feel as well.
Is memory foam or a hybrid better for a partner who tosses and turns?
Memory foam is generally the quietest, because it absorbs movement instead of passing it along. Hybrids with pocketed coils, where each small spring is wrapped on its own, keep motion low while adding bounce and airflow. Neither is measured on our listings, so it comes down to which feel you prefer.
Does a king or a split king reduce motion between partners?
More width helps: on a king each person gets about 38 inches, compared with 30 on a queen. A split king is two Twin XL mattresses side by side, so your partner is on a different mattress altogether and a restless sleeper bothers you much less.
Can I test a mattress for motion transfer before I buy?
Not before it ships. Text or call John first, tell him how you each sleep, and he will tell you honestly which model he would pick.
Does the bed frame or base matter for motion?
It can. Our listings ask for a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2 inches apart, and a frame that creaks or wobbles can make movement more noticeable. That second point is a general one, not something our listings measure.
