Best mattress for a guest room (and sofa beds, daybeds and trundles)

Hi, we’re John and Mimi. A guest room mattress has a funny job: it sits empty most of the year, then has to make everyone happy, from your mom to your college friend to the grandkids. You don’t need the thickest or priciest bed for that. You need the right size for the room, a feel most people like, and a little care so it’s fresh when company comes. Here’s how we’d choose, which of our mattresses we’d put in a spare room, and today’s prices: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.

What size mattress for a guest room?

Every measurement is in our mattress size chart. Torn between the two most popular guest sizes? Our full vs queen guide shows how much room each one needs, and the twin vs Twin XL guide covers the smaller sizes.

How thick should a guest mattress be?

Thinner and simpler than your own bed is fine. For a room that gets a few visits a year, 8" is a comfortable, budget-friendly choice. If adults stay often, for a week at a time, or a heavier guest uses the room, step up to 10" for more cushion; a 6" mattress can feel thin to some adults as an every-night bed. Save 6" for trundles, sofa beds and other spots that need a low profile. The full 6" to 14" range is in our mattress thickness guide.

Which firmness suits the most guests?

Medium to medium firm. Side sleepers usually want a little more cushion and stomach sleepers a little more support, and the middle of the scale is the best compromise when you don’t know who’s coming. A firm 8" is still a fine budget pick if your guests are mostly kids or back and stomach sleepers. Our mattress firmness guide explains the whole scale.

Sofa beds: measure before you buy

We don’t sell mattresses made specially for pull-out sleeper sofas, so here’s our honest advice. Sleeper sofas vary a lot, and many use a mattress that isn’t the same size as a standard bed mattress, so a standard mattress may not fit.

Daybeds and trundles

A daybed is usually a twin that works as a sofa during the day, and a trundle is a second twin that rolls out from under it, so both have their own thickness limits. Our bunk bed, trundle and daybed guide explains how to measure a trundle and what thickness looks best on a daybed.

Caring for a mattress that’s rarely used

For most spare rooms, start with the 10" Gel Comfort Reactive or 10" Rose in a full or queen, and add a protector from day one.

Questions we hear a lot

What is the best mattress for a guest room?

For most spare rooms, an 8 to 10 inch all-foam mattress with a medium to medium firm feel. You can’t know who will sleep on it, so the middle of the firmness scale suits the most people, and a guest bed gets far less use than your own, so a budget mattress makes sense. Our 10 inch Gel Comfort Reactive and 10 inch Rose are our usual picks.

Should a guest bed be a full or a queen?

A full (54 by 75 inches) fits most spare rooms and works for one adult or a couple for a short stay. If couples or tall guests visit often and the room has space, a queen (60 by 80 inches) is more comfortable. For a small room or home office, a twin or Twin XL saves floor space.

How thick should a guest room mattress be?

About 8 inches for a room that gets a few visits a year, and 10 inches if adults stay often or for longer visits. A 6 inch mattress is best for trundles, sofa beds and other spots that need a low profile.

Can I put a regular mattress on a sofa bed?

Only if it fits. Many sleeper sofas take a mattress that isn’t a standard bed size, so measure the old one and check the sofa maker’s label. Our 6 inch Essentials Firm lists use in most sofa-bed furniture, but our care instructions say not to fold or bend a mattress for long periods, so a sleeper that folds the mattress inside the couch every day may need a mattress made for that sofa.

How do I take care of a mattress that is rarely used?

Keep a mattress protector on it all the time, rotate it head to foot every few months, keep it dry and air the room out before guests arrive. Don’t store boxes or suitcases on it, since weight left for months can dent foam. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878.
