Latex vs memory foam mattress: the real differences (and a latex-like option)
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Latex vs memory foam comes up early when you compare mattresses, and the two feel very different. Here’s how each one behaves, who tends to like which, and, to be upfront, what we sell: we don’t carry latex mattresses, but three of ours use a reactive foam their listings describe as having a “latex-like bounce back.”
The short answer
- Memory foam hugs. It softens under your body heat and weight and shapes around your shoulders and hips, then comes back slowly. People who like to sink in usually love it.
- Latex pushes back. It’s springy and responsive: you rest more “on” it than “in” it, and it bounces back the moment you move. People who feel stuck on memory foam often prefer it.
- Latex usually costs more. Price varies a lot by brand and by how much latex is in the mattress, but latex mattresses are generally priced above comparable memory foam ones.
- Want something in between? Our ActiveAlign mattresses put a reactive foam with a “latex-like bounce back” (the listing’s words) with copper-gel memory foam. The lowest queen price among them today is the 10" ActiveAlign Reactive Copper Gel Memory Foam Mattress - Medium Firm at $739.
What is memory foam?
Memory foam is a polyurethane foam made to respond slowly. Warmth and pressure soften it, so it settles around the shape of your body and spreads your weight out, and when you get up it takes a moment to fill back in. That slow response is also why a partner turning over is less likely to shake you. The classic downsides are the flip side of the same thing: it can feel like you’re “stuck” when you change positions, and dense foam can hold heat, which is why many memory foam mattresses (ours included) add gel, copper-gel, charcoal or air channels. Our gel vs copper vs charcoal memory foam guide explains those infusions.
What is latex foam?
Latex foam is made from rubber: natural latex comes from the sap of rubber trees, synthetic latex is made from petroleum-based materials, and blended latex mixes the two. You’ll also see two common ways of making it, Dunlop and Talalay; makers generally describe Talalay as lighter and more even, and Dunlop as denser and firmer, but the feel depends on the specific mattress. Latex has an open, springy structure, so it responds right away instead of slowly sinking. A “latex mattress” can be all latex or just a latex layer over foam or coils, so it’s worth checking what’s actually inside before you compare prices.
Latex vs memory foam, side by side
General differences, not lab tests; any one mattress can be built differently.
| Memory foam | Latex | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Sink-in, body-hugging | Buoyant, “on top of” the bed |
| Response | Slow to fill back in | Springs back right away |
| Changing positions | Takes a little more effort | Easy, little resistance |
| Partner movement | Usually absorbs it well | You may notice a bit more bounce |
| Heat | Can hold heat; gel, copper and air channels help | Often described as more breathable |
| Weight | Varies by density | Generally heavy |
| Price | Wide range, including budget models | Generally higher |
| Allergy note | A polyurethane foam, not rubber | Not for anyone with a latex allergy unless their doctor says otherwise |
Which one is right for you?
- Lean memory foam if you love sinking in, sleep on your side and want pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, share the bed with a restless partner, or want the widest choice of prices. See best memory foam mattress and best mattress for side sleepers.
- Lean latex (or a bouncy alternative) if memory foam has made you feel stuck, you change positions a lot through the night, you like a lifted, buoyant feel, or you’ve slept warm on dense foam before. See best mattress for combination sleepers.
- Consider a hybrid if what you really want is bounce and airflow: coils add both, with foam on top. That comparison is in memory foam vs hybrid.
This is general comfort guidance, not medical advice. If you have back, joint or other health concerns, ask your doctor what’s right for you.
Want latex-like bounce? Our reactive foam mattresses
We don’t sell latex mattresses, and none of our mattress listings name latex as a material. What we do have are three ActiveAlign mattresses with a 2" reactive foam layer their listings describe as having a “latex-like bounce back,” paired with copper-gel infused memory foam. Every ActiveAlign listing states the foams are CertiPUR-US certified and includes a zip-off, machine-washable cover. Here they are, with today’s prices:
| Mattress | Height, feel and type | Layers (from the listing) | Queen | King |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10" ActiveAlign Reactive Copper Gel Memory Foam Mattress - Medium Firm | 10", medium firm, all foam | 1" copper-gel infused memory foam, 2" reactive foam (“latex-like bounce back”), 2" support foam, 5" Air Grid base | $739 | $809 |
| 12" ActiveAlign Reactive Copper Zoned Memory Foam Mattress - Medium | 12", medium, all foam, zoned | 2" reactive foam (“latex-like bounce back”) on top, 1" copper-gel infused memory foam, 2" zoned layer, 7" Air Grid base | $819 | $919 |
| 14" ActiveAlign Reactive Copper Zoned Hybrid Pocket Coil Mattress - Plush Medium Soft | 14", medium soft, hybrid, zoned | 2" reactive foam (“latex-like bounce back”) on top, 1" copper-gel infused memory foam, 2" zoned layer, 8" foam-encased pocketed coils, 1" base foam | $889 | $995 |
- Most bounce on top: the 12" and 14" put the reactive foam as the top layer; on the 10" it sits just under 1" of copper-gel memory foam, so you feel a little memory foam first.
- Zoned: the 12" and 14" add a 2" zoned layer (support foam at the head and foot, plush cooling gel under the upper torso, plush memory foam at the hips), covered in our zoned copper gel mattress guide.
- Coils too: the 14" is a hybrid, with 8" foam-encased pocketed coils under the foam, for the most push-back of the three.
More bounce from coils instead: every other hybrid we have in stock today, lowest queen price first: 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium Soy Foam & Pocket Coil Mattress - Medium Firm (queen $699); 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe Soy Foam & Pocket Coil Mattress - Medium Soft Plush (queen $799); 10" Allureluxe Hybrid Advanced Cooling Mattress with Lumi Bands - Medium Firm (queen $889); 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials Pocket Coil Mattress - Medium Firm (queen $989); 12" Sofinity Hybrid Signature Pocket Coil Mattress - Medium (queen $989); 14" Allureluxe Classic Cooling Hybrid Mattress with Lumi Bands - Plush (queen $1,049); 14” Hybrid Copper-Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress - Plush - 14HCOPPER (queen sold out today). What about “natural” foam?
Some shoppers look at latex because they want a plant-based material. We don’t sell latex, but our EcoCore line uses what its listings call “bio-based foam derived from soy, a renewable resource” in the comfort layer: the 10" EcoCore Origin (all foam), the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium and the 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe. That’s the listing’s description of one layer; we don’t make broader environmental claims about it, and it isn’t latex. If certifications matter to you, our new mattress smell guide shows which of our listings state CertiPUR-US certification.
A note on latex allergies
None of our mattress listings name latex as a material. They also don’t carry a separate “latex-free” statement, so if you or someone in your home has a latex allergy, text John before you order and he’ll check with the maker for the model you’re looking at, and follow your doctor’s advice. This isn’t medical advice.
Before you order
- Pick the feel first, then the material. A firm memory foam and a soft latex can feel more different than two latex mattresses. Our mattress firmness guide explains the scale.
- Give it time. Our listings say a mattress “may take up to 72 hours to fully recover and return to its original shape,” and any new mattress takes some getting used to; see how to break in a new mattress.
- Support underneath. Our mattress listings ask for “a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than two (2) inches apart.”
- Protect it. Our listings say liquid damage doesn’t qualify for a warranty replacement, so a protector is a good idea; see do you need a mattress protector.

Questions we hear a lot
Is latex or memory foam better?
Neither is better for everyone. Memory foam softens and hugs your body and absorbs a partner’s movement well; latex is springier and more responsive, so you rest more on top of it and move easily. If memory foam has made you feel stuck, latex or a bouncier foam may suit you better; if you love sinking in, memory foam usually wins.
Does latex sleep cooler than memory foam?
Latex is often described as more breathable than traditional dense memory foam. Many memory foam mattresses add gel, copper-gel, charcoal or air channels to help with heat, and hybrids add airflow through their coils. How warm any mattress feels also depends on your sheets, protector and room.
What does “latex-like” mean on your mattresses?
Our three ActiveAlign mattresses (10", 12" and 14") list a 2" reactive foam layer with a “latex-like bounce back.” It is a reactive foam, not latex: it springs back quicker than classic memory foam, and it is paired with copper-gel infused memory foam.
Do you sell latex mattresses?
No. None of our mattress listings name latex as a material. If you want a bouncier feel, look at the ActiveAlign mattresses or our hybrids. If you have a latex allergy, text John before you order so he can check with the maker for the model you want, and follow your doctor’s advice.
Is latex or memory foam better for side sleepers?
Both can work. Side sleepers usually want enough give at the shoulders and hips, and a softer memory foam is a common pick because it contours closely. If you change positions a lot through the night, a more responsive feel like latex or reactive foam can make turning over easier. This is general comfort guidance, not medical advice.
