Best hybrid mattress: every hybrid we sell, compared
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. A hybrid puts a layer of coils under the comfort foam, so you get some bounce, a steadier edge and more air moving through the mattress, with the cushion of foam on top. We sell eight hybrids, and they feel quite different from each other: some medium firm, some plush, some built around cooling layers, one with zoned support. Here they are side by side, layer by layer, at today’s prices, with our honest picks.
The short answer
- Best value hybrid: the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium (medium firm, 6" edge-to-edge pocketed coils, soy-based air foam and plush gel memory foam). Queen $699 today.
- A plusher hybrid without going to 14": the 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe (medium plush, twice the gel memory foam of the Premium). Queen $799 today.
- If you sleep warm: the 10" Allureluxe Hybrid (medium firm) or the 14" Allureluxe Classic (plush), both with Lumi Bands graphite cooling strips, ventilated bamboo charcoal memory foam and an Air Grid layer. Queen $889 and $1,049 today.
- Want zoned support and a bouncier top: the 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid (medium soft, reactive foam over a zoned layer and 8" foam-encased pocketed coils). Queen $889 today.
- A simple, coil-forward hybrid with a Tencel cover: the 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials (medium firm) or Signature (medium). Queen $989 today.
- Not sure a hybrid is for you at all? Our memory foam vs hybrid guide explains the difference and who each one suits.
What makes a mattress a hybrid?
A hybrid has two jobs split between two kinds of material. The comfort layers on top are foam: memory foam, gel foam, air foam or a springier reactive foam. Under them is a coil layer of small springs that carries most of the support. Seven of our eight hybrids list pocketed coils, small springs each wrapped on their own rather than tied into one connected spring unit, so one part of the mattress can give without dragging the rest with it; the eighth, the 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel, lists foam-encased coils. Most of our listings describe the coils as reducing motion transfer and helping airflow.
That gives a hybrid its typical personality: you feel a little more “on” the mattress than “in” it, it’s easy to change position, and the edge feels steadier when you sit on it. All eight of ours also list a patented edge support system along the sides. If you love a deep, slow hug, an all-foam mattress may suit you better; the memory foam vs hybrid guide has a side-by-side table of the trade-offs.

Coils: what the differences mean
The coil layer is where our hybrids differ most, so it is worth a minute.
- Pocketed coils, edge to edge. The EcoCore Hybrid Premium, EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe and 10" Allureluxe list edge-to-edge pocketed coils: individually wrapped springs that run all the way across the mattress. That is what gives these three their springy, lifted feel.
- Foam-encased pocketed coils. The 14" Allureluxe Classic, both Sofinity hybrids and the 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid list foam-encased pocketed coils, so the coil layer sits inside a foam surround. The 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel lists foam-encased coils too.
- Coil height. The listings show coil layers from 5" (10" Allureluxe) and 6" (both EcoCore hybrids) up to 7" (14" Allureluxe Classic and both Sofinity hybrids) and 8" (14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid and 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel). A taller coil layer generally means more of the mattress is spring rather than foam, so it tends to feel bouncier and more buoyant.
- The edge. Every one of our hybrids lists a patented edge support system for side support. If you sit on the edge to get dressed or need a steady edge to get up from, that matters.
What our listings don’t give is a coil count, so we don’t compare by it. Feel and comfort layers tell you more about how a mattress will sleep anyway.
Comfort layers: three families
On top of the coils, our hybrids fall into a few groups, and this is what decides how each one feels when you lie down.
EcoCore: soy-based foam and gel
Both EcoCore hybrids start with 2" of bio-based air foam made with soy, which the listing describes as open-celled for breathability, over plush gel-infused memory foam. The Premium has 1" of gel foam and a medium firm feel; the Deluxe doubles it to 2" and adds a 1" high-density transition foam, for a medium plush feel. Same coils, same washable cover, so the choice is simply how much cushion you want.
Allureluxe: built around cooling
The Allureluxe hybrids are the ones we point warm sleepers to. Their listings describe Lumi Bands, cooling strips made from natural graphite that pull heat away from the sleeping surface, alongside ventilated bamboo charcoal memory foam and an Air Grid layer with air channels. The 10" is medium firm with 5" coils; the 14" Classic is our plush cooling hybrid, with thicker ventilated foams and 7" foam-encased coils under them. For more on keeping cool, see our gel memory foam vs hybrid for hot sleepers guide.
Sofinity: simple and coil-forward
The Sofinity hybrids keep the top simple. The Essentials (medium firm) has 2" of breathable Sofinity foam over 7" foam-encased pocketed coils; the Signature (medium) adds a 2" gel-infused ventilated foam layer for a bit more cushion. Both come in a quilted Tencel cover that the listings say wicks away moisture. One thing to know: unlike our other hybrids, the Sofinity listings don’t describe the cover as machine-washable, so a protector is a good idea from day one.
Copper-gel: zoned or plush
The 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid starts with 2" of reactive foam, which its listing describes as having a latex-like bounce back, then 1" of copper-gel memory foam and a 2" zoned layer: support foam under the head and feet, plush cooling gel under the upper torso and plush memory foam under the hips. Our zoned copper gel mattress guide explains how the zones work. The 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel is a plush hybrid, with 3" of copper-gel memory foam and a 2" ridge foam over its coils.
Our picks by how you sleep
Firmness matters as much as construction, so match the feel to how you sleep. Every detail below comes from the mattress’s own listing.
| If you… | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep on your back and want a hybrid at the lowest price | 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium | Medium firm; 6" edge-to-edge pocketed coils; soy-based air foam over 1" plush gel memory foam; washable cover |
| Sleep on your stomach or back and like it on the firmer side | 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials | Medium firm; a thin 2" comfort layer over 7" foam-encased pocketed coils, so you stay on top of the bed |
| Sleep on your side | 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe | Medium plush; 2" plush gel memory foam plus a transition foam, over pocketed coils |
| Switch positions all night | 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid | Reactive foam with a latex-like bounce back on top, zoned layer, 8" coils |
| Sleep warm and want medium firm | 10" Allureluxe Hybrid | Lumi Bands graphite cooling strips, ventilated bamboo charcoal foam, 2" Air Grid foam |
| Sleep warm and want it plush | 14" Allureluxe Classic Hybrid | Plush; Lumi Bands, ventilated plush foams, Air Grid, 7" foam-encased coils |
| Want one balanced middle feel | 12" Sofinity Hybrid Signature | Medium; Sofinity foam plus gel-infused ventilated foam over 7" coils; Tencel cover |
As a rough guide, side sleepers usually like medium soft to medium, back sleepers medium to medium firm, and stomach sleepers firm. Our mattress firmness guide explains the scale, and the combination sleepers and couples guides go deeper for those sleepers. The 60-second mattress quiz narrows it down for you.

10", 12" or 14"?
Our hybrids come in three heights, and height changes more than looks.
- 10" (EcoCore Hybrid Premium, Allureluxe Hybrid): the most budget-friendly hybrids, and an easy fit with standard protectors and sheets. A good choice if your bed frame already sits high.
- 12" (EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe, both Sofinity hybrids): the middle ground, with more room for comfort foam or taller coils.
- 14" (Allureluxe Classic, ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid, Hybrid Copper-Gel): the most cushioning and the tallest coil layers. Your bed sits noticeably higher, which some people find easier to get in and out of.

Hybrids on an adjustable base
Yes, our hybrids work on an adjustable base. Every hybrid’s setup instructions list an adjustable base as a proper surface, and most of the listings say outright that the mattress is compatible with an adjustable base, sold separately. Pocketed coils are wrapped one by one rather than tied together, which is why this style of hybrid can bend with the base at the head and the foot. Our best mattress for an adjustable bed guide covers the details.
Here is what a queen hybrid plus our e3 adjustable base (head and foot lift, zero gravity, wireless remote) comes to today:
| Queen hybrid | Mattress | e3 base | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium | $699 | $499 | $1,198 |
| 10" Allureluxe Hybrid | $889 | $499 | $1,388 |
| 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid | $889 | $499 | $1,388 |
Queen prices read live from our catalog. Other bases and sizes are in our how to choose an adjustable base guide, and couples can look at a split king.
Getting it home and set up
- It comes in a box. Coils and all, our hybrids arrive compressed and rolled (the setup instructions have you unroll them from the plastic), with free FedEx shipping. A hybrid box can be heavy, so plan on two people to carry it, especially up stairs.
- Open it where it will live. The setup instructions say to place the mattress on a proper surface before opening (a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2" apart), then cut the plastic with scissors, never a razor blade.
- Give it time. The listings say it may take up to 72 hours to fully recover its shape, and you can sleep on it right away. Our mattress in a box expansion guide has the details.
- No box spring needed. A foundation, platform bed or slatted frame that meets the 2" rule is all a hybrid needs. See what to put under a mattress.
Protectors, sheets and care
Height decides which protector fits. Our Terry Cloth and Quilted Cotton protectors list a fit up to an 11" mattress, so they suit our 10" hybrids. For a 12" or 14" hybrid, the Premium Bamboo protector lists a fit up to 16". The listings say liquid spills don’t qualify for warranty claims, which is why we suggest a protector on day one; our mattress protector guide compares them.
The care instructions are short and the same across our hybrids: rotate the mattress for even wear, don’t stand or jump on it, don’t fold or bend it for long periods, and don’t let moisture soak in. Where the cover is machine-washable, wash it cold on a gentle cycle with like colors and air dry without heat. More in our how to clean a mattress guide.

Questions we hear a lot
What is the best hybrid mattress?
For most people, our 10 inch EcoCore Hybrid Premium: medium firm, with 6 inch edge-to-edge pocketed coils, soy-based air foam, plush gel memory foam and a zip-off, machine-washable cover. If you sleep warm, look at the Allureluxe hybrids with Lumi Bands graphite cooling strips. Every hybrid we sell is on this page at today’s price.
What is a hybrid mattress?
A hybrid has foam comfort layers on top of a layer of coils. The coils do most of the supporting and the foam does the cushioning, so a hybrid usually feels more lifted and bouncy than an all-foam mattress, with a steadier edge.
Is a hybrid mattress better than memory foam?
Neither is better for everyone. A hybrid suits people who like some bounce, change positions a lot or want a firmer edge; memory foam suits people who love a deep, hugging feel. Our memory foam vs hybrid guide compares them side by side.
Can you use a hybrid mattress on an adjustable base?
Yes. The setup instructions for every hybrid we sell list an adjustable base as a proper surface, and most of the listings say the mattress is compatible with an adjustable base, sold separately. Pocketed coils are wrapped one by one, so the mattress can bend with the base.
Do I need a box spring for a hybrid mattress?
No. Our setup instructions call for a proper surface: a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2 inches apart. A foundation, platform bed or slatted frame that meets that works. Text John at 818-924-3744 if you are not sure about your frame.
Tell us how you sleep
Tell John how you sleep, whether you run warm, who shares the bed and your budget, and he’ll tell you honestly which hybrid he’d pick, or whether an all-foam mattress makes more sense.
