Memory foam vs. hybrid mattress: which one should you buy?
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. After “what size?”, the question we get most is “should I get memory foam or a hybrid?” Both are great when they fit how you sleep, and they feel quite different. Here is the plain-English difference, who each one suits, and our picks in both styles at today’s prices: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.
The short answer
- Pick memory foam if you want deep pressure relief and that slow, hugging feel, you share the bed with a restless partner, or you want the most comfort for the money.
- Pick a hybrid if you like some bounce, want to feel more “on” the bed than “in” it, sleep hot, sit on the edge a lot, or are a heavier sleeper who wants extra push-back.
- Either one works on an adjustable base, and either can be soft, medium or firm. Firmness matters as much as the type, so check our firmness guide too.
What’s the difference?
- A memory foam mattress is foam all the way through: a comfort layer of memory foam (often with gel or copper mixed in) on top of a thick, firmer support foam.
- A hybrid mattress has foam comfort layers on top of a layer of pocketed coils, small springs each wrapped in fabric so they move on their own. The coils do the supporting; the foam does the cushioning.
Side by side
| What you care about | Memory foam | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Hugs and contours, slower to respond | Lifted and bouncier, quicker to respond |
| Pressure relief | Excellent, especially for shoulders and hips | Very good, from the foam on top |
| Feeling your partner move | Least motion, very quiet | A little more motion; pocketed coils keep it low |
| Sleeping cool | Good with gel, copper and air-channel foams | Usually cooler, since air moves between the coils |
| Edge support | Softer edges on most models | Firmer edges, easier to sit on and get up from |
| Changing positions | Takes a bit more effort (reactive foams help) | Easy |
| Weight and moving it | Lighter, easier to carry upstairs | Heavier, plan on two people |
| Price | Usually costs less | Usually costs more |
Who should get memory foam
- Side sleepers who need the shoulders and hips to sink in. See our side sleeper guide.
- Couples where one person tosses and turns, since foam soaks up motion best. More in our mattress for couples guide.
- Anyone with sore joints or pressure points who loves that cradled feel.
- Shoppers on a budget, and anyone carrying a mattress up stairs or into a small room.
Who should get a hybrid
- Hot sleepers. The open space between coils lets the mattress breathe. Our gel foam vs. hybrid for hot sleepers guide goes deeper on cooling.
- Back and stomach sleepers who like firmer, springier support.
- Heavier sleepers, who tend to sink through foam faster and often prefer the extra push-back from coils.
- Combination sleepers who switch positions all night, and anyone who sits on the edge of the bed to get dressed or get up.
- People who just don’t like the “stuck in the mattress” feeling of traditional memory foam.
What about an adjustable base?
Both styles bend fine on an adjustable base. Memory foam is the easiest fit because it folds smoothly at every angle. Pocketed-coil hybrids also work well, because each coil moves on its own. The one thing to avoid is an old-style innerspring with connected coils, which can fight the base. Our best mattress for an adjustable bed guide has the details.

Still torn? A few quick tie-breakers
- Did you love sinking into a hotel bed, or feel stuck in it? Loved it: foam. Felt stuck: hybrid.
- Do you wake up warm? Lean hybrid, or choose a gel or copper-gel foam.
- Does your partner’s tossing wake you up? Lean memory foam, or look at a split king.
- Want both? Zoned models like the 12" ActiveAlign use bouncier reactive foam, so they feel less “stuck” than classic memory foam.

Questions we hear a lot
What is the difference between memory foam and hybrid mattresses?
A memory foam mattress is foam all the way through. A hybrid puts foam comfort layers on top of pocketed coils, so it feels bouncier and more lifted, while memory foam hugs and contours more.
Is a hybrid or memory foam mattress better for back pain?
Either can work. Firmness matters more than type: most people do best on medium firm. Side sleepers often like memory foam or a zoned model, and back or stomach sleepers who want springier support often like a hybrid.
Do hybrid mattresses sleep cooler than memory foam?
Usually, yes. Air moves through the space between the coils. Gel, copper-gel and air-channel foams also help memory foam sleep cooler than older foams.
Which is better for couples, memory foam or hybrid?
Memory foam absorbs motion best, so it is great if a partner tosses and turns. Hybrids with pocketed coils also keep motion low and have firmer edges, which gives you more usable space.
Can a hybrid mattress go on an adjustable base?
Yes. Pocketed-coil hybrids bend well on an adjustable base because each coil moves on its own. Memory foam works too. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878.
