Best mattress for stomach sleepers: firmness, picks and tips
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Stomach sleepers usually know exactly what they don’t want: a bed they sink into. Here’s how to pick the right firmness for your weight, why the top layer matters more than the label, which of our mattresses we’d point you to, and a few simple tips for the pillow and the base. Prices are pulled live from our catalog, and every mattress ships brand new and factory-sealed, compressed in a box, with free FedEx shipping and a 10-year limited warranty.
The short answer
- Most stomach sleepers: firm or a firm-leaning medium firm, so your hips stay level with your shoulders.
- Our firm picks: the 12" Lavender Firm for a thick firm bed, the 8" Daisy Firm or 8" Gel Comfort Reactive (firm) on a budget.
- Like a little bounce? The 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium or 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials, both medium firm with pocket coils.
- Under about 130 lbs? Medium firm, like the 10" Gel Comfort Reactive or 10" EcoCore Origin, usually feels better than truly firm.
- Use a low pillow, or none. Our Low Profile Memory Foam Pillow has a 2.95" loft.
Why stomach sleeping needs a firmer bed
When you lie face down, your hips and belly are the heaviest part of you and they press straight into the mattress. On a soft or worn bed they sink lower than your chest and shoulders, and your lower back bows like a hammock. Many stomach sleepers feel that as a stiff lower back in the morning. A firmer surface keeps you lying flatter. Stomach sleepers also don’t need the deep shoulder cushioning a side sleeper does, which is why the usual advice in our mattress firmness guide is firm for stomach, medium firm for back and medium soft to medium for side.
How firm? It depends on your weight
A mattress feels softer the more you weigh, because you press further into it. Use this as a starting point:
| Your weight | Aim for | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 130 lbs | Medium firm (a truly firm bed can feel hard when you don’t sink in much) | 10" Gel Comfort Reactive, 10" EcoCore Origin; see petite sleepers |
| About 130–230 lbs | Firm, or a firm-leaning medium firm | 12" Lavender Firm, 8" Daisy Firm, 10" ActiveAlign Copper (medium firm) |
| Over about 230 lbs | Firm and thicker, or pocket coils for deeper support | 12" Lavender Firm, 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials; see heavier sleepers |
Why the top layer matters more than the label
For a stomach sleeper, the part that decides whether your hips sink is mostly the comfort layer on top. A thinner comfort layer over a firm core usually lets you lie “on” the bed rather than “in” it. Here’s what sits on top of each firm and medium firm mattress we sell, straight from the listings:
| Mattress | Feel | On top | Underneath |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12" Lavender Firm | Firm | 1.5" Air Foam, “firm yet conforming” | 2" support foam, 8.5" Air Grid base foam, edge support |
| 8" Daisy Firm | Firm | 2" Gel Air Memory Foam | 6" Air Grid |
| 6" Essentials Firm | Firm | 1" gel-infused memory foam | 2" Ridge Foam, 3" Ridge base foam (best for daybeds, trundles and sofa beds) |
| 10" ActiveAlign Copper | Medium firm | 1" copper-gel memory foam, 2" Reactive Foam with “latex-like bounce back” | 2" support foam, 5" Air Grid, edge support |
| 10" EcoCore Origin | Medium firm | 2" soy-based Air Foam, 2" plush Air Ridge foam | 6" Air Channel base |
| 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium | Medium firm | 2" soy-based Air Foam, 1" plush gel memory foam | 6" edge-to-edge pocketed coils, 1" base foam, edge support |
| 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials | Medium firm | 2" Sofinity Foam, quilted Tencel cover | 7" foam-encased pocketed coils, edge support |
A thicker mattress isn’t automatically softer, but more inches of soft foam on top usually means more sink. That’s why we steer stomach sleepers away from our plush models (the 12" Essentials Plush, 12" Gel Plush and 14" plush models), even though they’re great for side sleepers. How thick should you go overall? Usually 8" to 12" for stomach sleepers; see how thick should a mattress be.

Memory foam or hybrid for a stomach sleeper?
- Firm memory foam (Lavender, Daisy, Gel Comfort Reactive) gives a steady, quiet surface and usually costs less.
- A hybrid (EcoCore Hybrid Premium, Sofinity Hybrid Essentials) adds push-back from pocketed coils, which many stomach sleepers like because it’s easier to roll over and you sit higher on the bed. Coils also leave more room for air to move.
- Reactive foam (10" ActiveAlign Copper) is a middle ground: foam, but with a quicker bounce-back than classic slow memory foam.

Pillow and hip tips for stomach sleepers
- Go low. A thick pillow bends your neck up and back when you’re face down. Our Low Profile Memory Foam Pillow for Stomach & Back Sleepers has a 2.95" loft, a ventilated memory foam core and a zip-off washable cover. Some stomach sleepers use a very thin pillow, or none. More in how to choose a pillow.
- A thin pillow under the hips is a common trick some stomach sleepers use to keep the lower back from arching, especially on a bed that’s a little soft for them.
Stomach sleeper, but not only on your stomach?
- Stomach and side: medium firm is the safest middle. The 12" iSwitch Flippable has a medium firm side and a medium soft side, so you can start on the firm side and flip if your shoulders want more cushion. See best mattress for combination sleepers.
- Sharing with a side sleeper? A split king is two Twin XL mattresses side by side, so each of you picks your own feel. See split king for couples and best mattress for couples.
Do stomach sleepers need an adjustable base?
Not for sleeping: stomach sleepers sleep flat, and that’s fine. Where a base helps is everything else. Raise the head to read, watch TV or have coffee in bed, then lower it back to flat when you roll onto your stomach. If you share the bed with a back sleeper who likes zero gravity, a split king lets their side lift while yours stays flat. Our mattresses work on an adjustable base; see best mattress for an adjustable bed. Not using one? Our listings call for a continuously solid surface or slats no more than 2 inches apart, and a sagging base makes any mattress feel too soft (what to put under a memory foam mattress).
Signs your mattress is too soft for stomach sleeping
- You wake up with a stiff lower back that eases once you’re up and moving.
- Your hips feel lower than your chest, or you feel “in a hole” in the middle of the bed.
- You’ve started sleeping on your side or back just to get comfortable.
- There’s a visible dip where you sleep. Check the base first, then see how to fix a sagging mattress and how long does a mattress last.

Questions we hear a lot
What type of mattress is best for stomach sleepers?
Usually a firm or firm-leaning medium firm mattress, so your hips stay level with your shoulders and your lower back does not bow. A thin comfort layer over a firm core helps you lie on the bed rather than in it. Our first pick is the 12 inch Lavender Firm; on a budget, the 8 inch Daisy Firm.
Is memory foam bad for stomach sleepers?
Not if it is firm enough. Firm memory foam like our Lavender, Daisy and 8 inch Gel Comfort Reactive works well for many stomach sleepers. What usually does not work is a thick, plush memory foam top that lets the hips sink. If you want more bounce, a medium firm hybrid with pocket coils is the other option.
Should a lighter stomach sleeper still get a firm mattress?
Often a step softer. Under about 130 lbs you do not press far into a firm bed, so it can feel hard. Medium firm, like our 10 inch Gel Comfort Reactive or 10 inch EcoCore Origin, is usually the better fit. Over about 230 lbs, go firm and thicker, or choose pocket coils.
What pillow is best for stomach sleepers?
A low, thin pillow, or none, so your neck is not bent up and back. Our Low Profile Memory Foam Pillow for Stomach and Back Sleepers has a 2.95 inch loft and a zip-off washable cover. Some stomach sleepers also put a thin pillow under the hips.
Can a stomach sleeper share a bed with a side sleeper?
Yes. Medium firm is the usual middle ground, the 12 inch iSwitch has a medium firm side and a medium soft side, or a split king lets each of you pick your own Twin XL mattress.
