Mattress topper vs new mattress: when a topper helps, and when it’s time to replace
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. A lot of people ask us whether a topper can save them from buying a new mattress. Sometimes it can. First, so you know where we stand: we don’t sell mattress toppers, so nothing on this page is a pitch for one. Here’s how to tell when a topper is a reasonable fix, when it’s money spent on a bed that’s already done, and what to try first for free.
The short answer
- A topper changes the feel on top. It doesn’t add support underneath. It can make a firm bed feel softer; it can’t lift a dip or bring back worn-out foam or springs.
- A topper can make sense when your mattress is still flat and supportive but feels too firm for you, or for a short-term fix like a guest bed.
- A new mattress beats a topper when the bed sags, has lumps or broken springs, feels too soft, or is old and you’re no longer sleeping well on it.
- Check what’s underneath first. A tired box spring or wide-gapped slats can make a good mattress feel bad. See how to fix a sagging mattress.
- Bought your mattress from us? A deep dip in the foam may be a warranty claim, so text John before you buy anything.
What a topper does (and what it can’t do)
A topper is a separate layer, usually foam or fiber, that sits on top of the mattress under your fitted sheet. Think of it as changing the surface you lie on, not the bed itself.
- It can soften the surface. If your shoulders and hips feel pressed on a bed that’s otherwise in good shape, a softer layer on top can take the edge off.
- It can’t add support. It follows the shape of whatever is under it. Put it over a dip and it settles into the same low spot (our sagging mattress guide explains why).
- It adds height. Measure the mattress with the topper on and check it against your sheet and protector pocket depth. See how to measure for a mattress.
- Thick foam on top can sleep warmer. If you already run hot, extra foam over the mattress can trap heat. See gel memory foam vs hybrid for hot sleepers.
- It isn’t a protector, and a protector isn’t a topper. A waterproof protector is thin and keeps spills out; it won’t change the feel much. See do you need a mattress protector.
Topper or new mattress? Find your situation
| Your situation | Will a topper help? | Better first step |
|---|---|---|
| Mattress is fairly new and flat, just feels too firm | Maybe | Give it a few weeks to break in and check the base; see how to break in a new mattress |
| Guest bed or a short-term fix | Often reasonable | If guests use it a lot, see best mattress for a guest room |
| You see a dip where you sleep | Not for a deep dip | Check the base and measure the dip; see how to fix a sagging mattress |
| The bed feels too soft and your hips sink | Usually not | A layer on top doesn’t stop what’s underneath from sinking; see firm mattress guide |
| Lumps, broken or poking springs | No | Time to replace it |
| It’s old and you’re not sleeping well | Rarely worth it | See how long does a mattress last |
| You and your partner want different feels | Hard to do with one topper | See best mattress for couples |
Try these first (they’re free)
- Check the base. Strip the bed and look at the box spring, slats and center support. Our mattress listings call for a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2 inches apart. A solid platform also feels firmer than slats or an adjustable base, which is normal.
- Give a new mattress time. Foam usually softens slightly as it breaks in, and your body needs time to get used to a flat, supportive surface after an old bed with a dip. A few weeks is a fair trial.
- Rotate it head to foot. Our care instructions say to rotate the mattress to give uniform wear to the sleeping surface.
- Flip it, but only if it’s two-sided. Our 12" iSwitch has a medium firm side and a medium soft side; the listing says you can switch the comfort and feel by simply flipping it. Most foam mattresses are one-sided, so flipping them puts you on the firm base foam.
- On an adjustable base? Raising the head a little or using zero gravity changes how firm the bed feels. See our zero gravity guide.
- Recheck your pillow. A pillow that’s too high or too low can make the whole bed feel wrong. See how to choose a pillow.
When a new mattress beats a topper
If you’ve fixed the base and given it a fair try, these are the signs a topper would just be covering up the problem:
- A dip that comes back on a solid, flat base, even after rotating.
- Lumps, soft spots, or springs you can feel or hear.
- You and your partner roll toward the middle.
- You wake up stiff and it eases once you’re up and moving.
- You sleep better on a guest bed, a hotel bed or the couch.
- It’s past the common 7-to-10-year rule of thumb and you’re not sleeping well.

Check the warranty before you buy anything
Every mattress we sell carries a 10-year limited warranty that starts on the delivery date. Our Warranty page covers breakdown in the foam that leaves a visible indentation deeper than 3/4 of an inch, as long as it isn’t caused by a sag in the foundation, slats, box spring or platform. Slight body impressions and normal softening aren’t defects. If yours is a mattress from us, text John your order number and a photo of the dip with a straightedge and ruler across it. The full walkthrough is in mattress warranty explained. Bought it somewhere else? Check that warranty’s own wording; terms differ from brand to brand.
What about cost?
We don’t sell toppers, so we won’t quote topper prices here. A topper is usually the smaller purchase, and on a bed that’s still in good shape, that can be money well spent. On a bed that’s worn out, it tends to buy a few more months of the same problem. Here’s what a brand-new mattress costs from us today, so you can compare for your size. Every one ships brand new and factory-sealed, compressed in a box, with free FedEx shipping and a 10-year limited warranty.

Questions we hear a lot
Is a mattress topper better than a new mattress?
Only when the mattress underneath is still in good shape. A topper changes the feel on top but adds no support, so it can soften a flat, supportive bed that feels too firm. If the mattress sags, has lumps or broken springs, feels too soft or is old and you are sleeping badly, a new mattress is the better fix.
Can a mattress topper fix a sagging mattress?
Not a deep sag. A topper follows the shape of whatever is under it, so it tends to settle into the same low spot. Check the box spring, slats and center support first, then measure the dip. On a mattress bought from us, foam breakdown deeper than 3/4 of an inch on proper support may be covered by our warranty.
Will a topper make a firm mattress softer?
It can soften the surface of a bed that is otherwise flat and supportive. Before buying one, give a new mattress a few weeks to break in, check that a solid platform is not making it feel firmer, and flip it if it is two-sided, like our 12-inch iSwitch with a medium firm side and a medium soft side.
Does MimiJohn sell mattress toppers?
No. We do not sell toppers. We sell mattresses, adjustable bases, foundations and frames, pillows, sheets and waterproof mattress protectors. A protector is thin and keeps spills out; it is not a topper and will not noticeably change how your bed feels.
How do I know I need a new mattress instead of a topper?
Common signs are a dip that comes back on a solid base after rotating, lumps or springs you can feel, rolling toward the middle, sleeping better on other beds, and a mattress past the 7-to-10-year rule of thumb. This is general guidance, not medical advice. Text John a photo and he will tell you honestly.
Not sure if you need a topper or a new mattress?
Text John a photo of your bed (with a straightedge across any dip), what’s underneath it, how old it is and what bothers you about it. He’ll tell you honestly if a cheaper fix will do, even if that means you don’t buy anything from us. Text or call 818-924-3744, 6 AM to 9 PM Pacific, or take the 60-second mattress quiz.
