How much does a mattress cost? Real prices by size, type and thickness
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. “How much should a mattress cost?” is one of the first things people ask us, and the honest answer is: less than many people expect, if you know what you’re paying for. Below are real prices for every mattress we sell, read live from our catalog (lowest, middle and highest in each size), what each size up adds, how foam, coils and thickness change the price, and what the rest of the bed costs.
The short answer
- A queen mattress from us costs $309 to $1,049 today, with a middle price of about $719 across the 22 queens in stock. Free FedEx shipping is included in every price.
- All-foam mattresses cost the least. Our lowest-priced queen today is the 6" Essentials Firm at $309; for an everyday adult bed, our lowest-priced 10"-or-thicker queen is the 10" Gel Comfort Reactive at $399.
- Hybrids (coils plus foam) cost more. Our lowest-priced hybrid queen today is the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium at $699.
- Size changes the price. The same mattress in a king usually costs more than the queen, and a full or Twin XL costs less (table below).
- A higher price doesn’t buy a better fit. It buys thickness, extra comfort layers, coils, zoning or cooling materials. Firmness and how you sleep matter more; start there.
Across the wider market, a queen mattress can cost anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the brand, materials and where you buy it. The figures on this page are our own prices, not a market average.

How much more does each size up cost?
Comparing the same mattress in two sizes is the fairest way to see what a bigger bed adds. Here is the difference across every model we have in stock in both sizes today:
| Going from | Usual difference | Range | Models compared |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin XL → Full | +$90 | $0 to $200 | 19 1 same price |
| Full → Queen | +$45 | $10 to $200 | 20 |
| Queen → King | +$100 | $50 to $150 | 20 |
| King → California king | +$0 | $0 to $110 | 20 18 same price |
A few things stand out. Each size up usually adds to the price, so if a queen fits your room and your sleeping arrangement, there’s no need to pay for a king (our queen vs king guide helps you decide). And a king and a California king are often the same price, so choose between them by fit, not cost (king vs California king). For one sleeper, a full instead of a queen or a Twin XL saves money without changing the feel.
Memory foam vs hybrid: what the coils cost
| Type (queen, in stock today) | Lowest | Middle | Highest | Models |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All foam | $309 | $679 | $909 | 15 |
| Hybrid (pocketed or foam-encased coils) | $699 | $889 | $1,049 | 7 |
A hybrid puts a layer of coils under the foam, so there is simply more inside it. What you get for the extra money, according to our hybrid listings, is more bounce, more airflow and a firmer edge; what you don’t automatically get is a better night’s sleep. Plenty of people sleep best on all foam, which also soaks up more motion from a partner. Our memory foam vs hybrid guide covers who suits which, and best hybrid mattress and best memory foam mattress compare every model.
Does a thicker mattress cost more?
Usually, yes, because there is more foam (and sometimes coils) inside. Our queens by thickness today:
| Thickness | Queen from | Middle | Up to | Models |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6" | $309 | $309 | $309 | 1 |
| 8" | $319 | $334 | $349 | 2 |
| 10" | $399 | $649 | $889 | 6 |
| 12" | $519 | $784 | $989 | 10 |
| 14" | $729 | $889 | $1,049 | 3 |
Notice the overlap: some 12" mattresses cost less than some 10" ones, because the materials matter as much as the height. Thicker isn’t automatically better either. As a rule of thumb, 10" to 12" suits most adults, 8" to 10" is plenty for kids, guest rooms and lighter sleepers, and heavier sleepers often prefer 12" or more. Our how thick should a mattress be guide explains why.
What you’re actually paying for
- Comfort layers: more and thicker foam on top usually means a softer, more contouring feel and a higher price.
- Coils: pocketed or foam-encased coils add bounce and airflow and cost more than an all-foam core.
- Edge support and zoning: a reinforced edge or zones that support the hips and shoulders differently add to the build.
- Cooling materials and covers: gel, copper, graphite or charcoal foams and special cover fabrics. Our gel vs copper vs charcoal guide explains what each one is for.
- What price doesn’t change: how firm a mattress feels. A budget mattress can be exactly the right feel for you, and a premium one can be wrong. Match the feel first with our mattress firmness guide.
Our best affordable mattress guide goes model by model through what you give up (and what you don’t) as the price drops, with our picks under $500, $700 and $1,000.
What the rest of the bed costs
The mattress is the biggest piece, but plan for what goes under and on it. Queen prices for what we sell, read live today:
| Piece | Queen price today | Do you need it? |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation with legs | $279 | Only if what you have isn’t a solid surface or slats no more than 2" apart. See what to put under a memory foam mattress. |
| Upholstered bed frames | $629 to $649 | Optional; a frame you already own is fine if it gives proper support. |
| Adjustable bases | $439 to $1,599 | Optional; replaces the foundation if you want to sit up in bed. See is an adjustable bed worth it. |
| Mattress protectors | $34 to $69 | A good idea: our listings say liquid damage doesn’t qualify for a warranty replacement. |
| Sheet set | $89 | Only if your sheets don’t fit the new size or a thicker mattress. |
| Pillows | $38 to $77 each | Optional; worth it if yours are flat or lumpy. |

How to compare mattress prices fairly
- Compare the same size. A “from” price is often the twin; check the size you’ll actually buy.
- Check that shipping is included. Ours ships free by FedEx and every price on this page already includes it.
- Read what’s inside. Layer thicknesses, coils and the foam certification tell you what you’re paying for.
- Read the warranty and the purchase policy before you order. Ours are on the Purchase Policy & Warranty page; our mattress warranty explained guide covers what a warranty does and doesn’t cover.
- Be wary of a giant “was” price. A big crossed-out number doesn’t tell you much on its own. Our best time to buy a mattress guide covers how to tell a real deal from a dressed-up one.
Wondering how we keep our prices where they are? We have no showroom and no big ad budget; see why our prices are lower.
Order the right one the first time
Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed straight from the factory, so per our Purchase Policy & Warranty we can’t accept returns once an order has shipped, and there’s no sleep trial. You can change the size or model, or cancel, any time before it ships: just text John. That’s one more reason to choose by fit first and price second.

Questions we hear a lot
How much does a queen mattress cost?
It varies a lot by brand and build; across the market a queen can cost from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand. In our own lineup, all-foam queens start under $500 and hybrids with coils cost more. This guide shows our lowest, middle and highest price in every size, read live, with free FedEx shipping included.
How much more does a king cost than a queen?
For the same mattress, a king usually costs more than the queen. In our lineup the difference for the same model is usually under $200, and a king and a California king are often the same price. The size-step table in this guide shows today’s differences.
Is a more expensive mattress better?
Not automatically. A higher price usually buys a thicker build, more comfort layers, coils, zoning or cooling materials. It does not change how firm a mattress feels, and the right firmness for how you sleep matters more than the price.
Why do hybrid mattresses cost more than memory foam?
A hybrid has a layer of pocketed or foam-encased coils under its foam layers, so there is more inside it. The coils add bounce and airflow; all-foam mattresses usually cost less and absorb more motion from a partner.
What else should I budget for besides the mattress?
Plan for what goes under it if your current frame is not a solid surface or slats no more than 2 inches apart, a waterproof protector (liquid damage does not qualify for a warranty replacement), and sheets if you change size or thickness. An adjustable base is optional and replaces a foundation.
