Best 12-inch mattress: every 12" model we sell, compared
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Twelve inches is one of the most common mattress heights, and for good reason: it leaves room for a real comfort layer on top of a solid support core without making the bed feel tall. But a 12" mattress can be plush, firm, all foam or a hybrid. Here’s how to choose, what to know about sheets and protectors, and every 12" mattress we sell at today’s prices.
The short answer
- A 12" mattress suits most adults: side and back sleepers, couples, and anyone putting it on an adjustable base. Kids, bunk beds and guest rooms usually don’t need that much.
- The height doesn’t set the feel. The materials do: our 12" models run from plush to firm. Pick the feel first, then the build.
- Want coils? 12" hybrids: 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe, 12" Sofinity Hybrid Signature, 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials. Want all foam? 12" Essentials Plush, 12" Gel Plush, 12" Copper Gel, 12" ActiveAlign Copper Zoned, 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel, 12" Lavender Firm, 12" iSwitch Flippable, 12" BioPosture iSwitch.
- Check the protector. Some protectors only fit up to 11". For a 12" mattress use one that fits deeper (details below).
- Today: 11 twelve-inch mattresses in stock, queens from $519, all with free FedEx shipping.
Why 12 inches is a popular height
Every mattress has a support core at the bottom (dense foam or pocketed coils) and comfort layers on top. In a 12" mattress there’s room for both. On our 12" listings the comfort foam on top runs from 1.5" (the firm Lavender) to about 5.5" (the Gel Plush), over a 5.5" to 8.5" base foam or coil core. Thinner mattresses usually give up some of one or the other; thicker ones mostly add more cushion on top.
- Room to sink in without bottoming out, which side sleepers and couples tend to notice.
- Still easy to live with: a normal bed height on most frames, and standard bedding is easier to find than for 14" and up (with one catch on protectors, below).
- Bends well on an adjustable base. Every 12" listing names an adjustable base as a proper surface.
These are general rules of thumb, not a standard. The full picture by body weight, sleeping position and what the mattress sits on is in how thick should a mattress be.
10" vs 12" vs 14": today’s prices
Queen prices for every mattress we sell in each height, read live from our catalog (in-stock sizes only):
| Height | Models in stock | Queen from | Middle queen | Queen up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10" | 6 | $399 | $649 | $889 |
| 12" | 11 | $519 | $784 | $989 |
| 14" | 4 | $729 | $889 | $1,049 |
The ranges overlap, because materials (coils, zoning, cooling foams) move the price as much as height does. Choose 10" if you’re lighter, mostly sleep on your back or stomach, or want to spend less; see best affordable mattress. Choose 14" if you want an extra-plush top or you’re a heavier sleeper who likes thick cushioning over coils; see best mattress for heavier sleepers and best soft mattress. - Not sure? Two-sided: 12" iSwitch Flippable (queen $769 today), 12" BioPosture iSwitch (queen $909 today). One side is medium soft, the other medium firm; flip it to change the feel. See best mattress for combination sleepers.
Feel is personal, and your weight changes it: a lighter person barely compresses a plush top, a heavier person sinks further. Our mattress firmness guide explains the scale.

12" all foam or 12" hybrid?
- All foam (8 in stock today) gives a more hugging, close-conforming feel and soaks up movement, so you feel less of a partner turning over.
- Hybrid (3 in stock today) puts 6" to 7" of pocketed or foam-encased coils under the foam. Our 12" hybrid listings say the coils add support and airflow and cut down on motion transfer, and hybrids generally feel bouncier than all foam.
The lowest-priced 12" hybrid queen today is the 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe at $799.

Pick by situation
- Lowest-priced 12" queen: 12" Copper Gel (queen $519 today).
- You sit on the edge a lot: listings that name a patented edge support system: 12" Gel Plush, 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe, 12" ActiveAlign Copper Zoned, 12" Sofinity Hybrid Signature, 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel, 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials, 12" iSwitch Flippable, 12" BioPosture iSwitch.
- You want zoning: the 12" ActiveAlign Copper Zoned (queen $819 today) has a 2" zoned layer: support foam at the head and feet, plush cooling gel under the upper torso and plush memory foam at the hips. See how zoning works.
- You sleep warm: every 12" listing names a cooling feature (gel, copper-gel, air-channel or Air Grid base foam, a ventilated foam or a cooling cover), and coils add airflow. Compare them in best cooling mattress.
- Going on an adjustable base: any of them; see the section below.
Sheets and protectors for a 12" mattress
This is the part people miss. Two of our mattress protectors, the Terry Cloth and the Quilted Cotton, list a fit of up to 11 inches, so they’re a squeeze on a 12" mattress. For a 12" mattress:
- The Premium Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector fits up to a 16" mattress (queen $69 today).
- The Essentials Bedding Bundle lists a fitted sheet with a 16" skirt and a protector with a 16" pocket depth, plus pillows and a flat sheet (queen $95 today).
- Whatever sheets you use, check the pocket depth: a protector adds a little height, so look for a fitted sheet deeper than 12".
Our listings recommend a protector (not required) because liquid damage doesn’t qualify for a warranty replacement. More in do you need a mattress protector and best sheets for an adjustable bed.
What to put it on, and how tall the bed will be
- Support: every 12" listing calls for a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2" apart. See what to put under a memory foam mattress.
- Adjustable base: 12" is a comfortable thickness for one; it bends at the head and foot without much fight. Our e3 adjustable base (queen $499 today) has head and foot lift, zero gravity and a wireless remote. More in best mattress for an adjustable base.
- Bed height: add the frame or base height to the 12". Most people like the top of the mattress around knee height so it’s easy to sit on and get up from.
- Bunk beds and trundles: 12" is usually too thick; check the bunk’s label and see bunk bed and trundle mattresses.
Delivery and the first few days
All of these ship compressed and rolled. Unwrap with scissors (the listings say never a razor blade), let it expand, and you can sleep on it the first night; full recovery can take up to 72 hours. Foam feels firmer when it’s new and cool, so give it a few weeks; see how to break in a new mattress. Every listing says to rotate the mattress for even wear.
Order the right one the first time
Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed straight from the factory, so per our Purchase Policy & Warranty we can’t accept returns once an order has shipped, and there’s no sleep trial. You can change the size or model, or cancel, any time before it ships: just text John. Every 12" mattress here comes with a 10-year limited warranty; see mattress warranty explained.

Questions we hear a lot
Is 12 inches a good mattress thickness?
For most adults, yes. A 12 inch mattress has room for a real comfort layer over a solid support core, so it suits side and back sleepers, couples and adjustable bases. Lighter sleepers and kids are often fine on 8 to 10 inches; people who want an extra-plush top sometimes prefer 14 inches.
Is a 12 inch mattress firm or soft?
Either. Thickness does not set the feel; the materials do. We sell 12 inch mattresses from plush to firm, plus two-sided flippable models with a medium soft and a medium firm side.
Do I need deep pocket sheets for a 12 inch mattress?
Usually a little deeper than standard. A protector adds some height, so look for a fitted sheet deeper than 12 inches. Two of our mattress protectors fit only up to 11 inches; the Premium Bamboo Viscose protector fits up to 16 inches, and the Essentials Bedding Bundle lists a 16 inch sheet skirt and protector pocket.
Can a 12 inch mattress go on an adjustable base?
Yes. Every 12 inch mattress we sell lists an adjustable base as a proper surface in its setup instructions, along with a solid surface or slats no more than 2 inches apart.
Can I return a 12 inch mattress if it is not right?
Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed from the factory, so we cannot accept returns once an order has shipped and there is no sleep trial. You can change the model or size, or cancel, any time before it ships; text John how you sleep before you order.
