Best 14-inch mattress: every 14" model we sell, compared
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. A 14" mattress is the thick, plush end of the range: lots of cushion on top, a tall coil or foam core underneath, and a bed that sits noticeably higher. Here’s who 14 inches suits (and who doesn’t need it), how it compares with 10" and 12" at today’s prices, what sheets and protectors actually fit, and every 14" mattress we sell, side by side.
General shopping information, not medical advice.
The short answer
- A 14" mattress suits people who want a plush, deep top: side sleepers who like to sink in at the shoulder and hip, heavier sleepers who want thick cushioning over coils, and anyone after a tall, hotel-style bed.
- Every 14" we sell is on the soft side: plush or medium soft on our own feel scale. If you want firm, a thicker mattress isn’t the way to get it; look at 10" or 12" (links below).
- Mostly hybrids: 14" Allureluxe Classic Hybrid, 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel Plush, 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid have coils; 14" Ananda Pearl & Gel Plush is all foam.
- Check the bedding. Standard fitted sheets usually stop at about 12", and two of our three protectors fit only up to 11". Details below.
- Today: 4 fourteen-inch mattresses in stock, queens from $729, all with free FedEx shipping.
Who a 14" mattress is for (and who can skip it)
Every mattress has a support core at the bottom (dense foam or coils) and comfort layers on top. The extra height of a 14" mostly goes into the top: on our 14" hybrid listings there’s 5" to 6" of foam over a 7" to 8" foam-encased coil unit, plus a 1" foam layer. As a rule of thumb, not a hard rule:
- Good fit: side sleepers who want more cushion, people over about 230 lbs or two adults sharing who want to sink in without bottoming out, and anyone who simply likes a plush bed. See best mattress for heavier sleepers and best mattress for side sleepers.
- Probably more than you need: lighter sleepers (under about 130 lbs) who may not sink far enough into a thick plush top to feel its cushion, kids, guest rooms, and anyone who wants a firm surface. See best mattress for petite and lightweight sleepers and best firm mattress.
- Not for bunk beds or trundles: those labels usually allow far less; see bunk bed and trundle mattresses.

10" vs 12" vs 14": today’s prices
Queen prices for every mattress we sell in each height, read live from our catalog (in-stock sizes only):
| Height | Models in stock | Queen from | Middle queen | Queen up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10" | 6 | $399 | $649 | $889 |
| 12" | 11 | $519 | $784 | $989 |
| 14" | 4 | $729 | $889 | $1,049 |
The ranges overlap, because materials (coils, zoning, cooling foams) move the price as much as height does. Choose 12" if you want plenty of comfort layer in any feel from plush to firm, and an easier fit for sheets; every 12" model is compared in best 12-inch mattress. Choose 10" if you’re lighter or want to spend less; see best 10-inch mattress. More on what each step up costs in how much does a mattress cost.

Pick your 14" by feel and build
- Plush (side sleepers, “every bed feels hard”): 14" Ananda Pearl & Gel Plush (queen $729 today), 14" Allureluxe Classic Hybrid (queen $1,049 today), 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel Plush (from $839 in Full today).
- Medium soft (a little more push-back under a soft top): 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid (queen $889 today).
- Hybrid or all foam? The hybrids put 7" to 8" of foam-encased coils under the foam; their listings describe the coils as adding supportive buoyancy and breathability, and the Allureluxe listing adds less motion transfer. All foam gives a more hugging, close-conforming feel. More in memory foam vs hybrid.
The lowest-priced 14" hybrid queen today is the 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid at $889.
Feel is personal, and your weight changes it: a lighter person barely compresses a plush top, a heavier person sinks further. Our mattress firmness guide explains the scale, and best soft mattress compares every soft model in every height.
Pick by situation
- Lowest-priced 14" queen: 14" Ananda Pearl & Gel Plush (queen $729 today).
- You sit on the edge a lot: listings that name a patented edge support system: 14" Allureluxe Classic Hybrid, 14" Hybrid Copper-Gel Plush, 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid.
- You want zoning: the 14" ActiveAlign Zoned Hybrid (queen $889 today) has a 2" zoned layer: support foam at the head and feet, plush cooling gel under the upper torso and plush memory foam at the hips, under a reactive foam the listing calls “latex-like bounce back.” See how zoning works.
- You sleep warm: a thick plush top can feel warmer because you sink further in, so every 14" listing names a cooling feature (copper-gel or gel foam, ventilated foams, an Air Grid layer or a cooling cover). The 14" Allureluxe Classic Hybrid (queen $1,049 today) adds graphite cooling bands. Compare them in best cooling mattress.
- You want deep all-foam plush: the 14" Ananda Pearl & Gel Plush (queen $729 today), which its listing calls the plush, extra-thick big sister of our 12" Ananda.
- Tall sleeper, California king: 14" cal kings from 14" Ananda Pearl & Gel Plush at $809 today. See best mattress for tall people.
Sheets and protectors for a 14" mattress
This is the part people miss. Standard fitted sheets usually fit mattresses up to about 12", so a 14" mattress needs deep-pocket sheets, and a protector adds a little height on top. Our Terry Cloth and Quilted Cotton protectors list a fit of up to 11 inches, so they won’t fit a 14". What does:
- The Premium Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector fits up to a 16" mattress and lists 5-sided spill protection (queen $69 today).
- The Essentials Bedding Bundle lists a fitted sheet with a 16" skirt and a 16" pocket depth, plus a protector, pillows and a flat sheet (queen $95 today).
- Buying sheets elsewhere? Look for a pocket depth of about 15" or more so the corners stay put with a protector on.
Our listings recommend a protector (not required) because liquid damage doesn’t qualify for a warranty replacement. More in do you need a mattress protector and best sheets for an adjustable bed.
What to put it on, and how tall the bed will be
- Support: every 14" listing calls for a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2" apart. See what to put under a memory foam mattress.
- Adjustable base: every 14" listing says it’s compatible with an adjustable base. A very thick mattress can bend a little stiffer at the fold than a 10" or 12", which is normal. Our e3 adjustable base (queen $499 today) has head and foot lift, zero gravity, a wireless remote and leg options of 3", 6", 9" or 12" (or none). More in best mattress for an adjustable base.
- Bed height: add the frame or base height to the 14". If the bed is getting tall, pick a lower frame or shorter base legs; most people like the top of the mattress around knee height so it’s easy to sit on and get up from.
Delivery and the first few days
All of these ship compressed and rolled. Unwrap with scissors (the listings say never a razor blade), let it expand, and you can sleep on it the first night; full recovery can take up to 72 hours. Foam feels firmer when it’s new and cool, so give it a few weeks; see how to break in a new mattress. Every listing says to rotate the mattress for even wear and not to stand or jump on it. The three hybrids have a zip-off, machine-washable cover (cold, gentle cycle, air dry without heat).
Order the right one the first time
Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed straight from the factory, so per our Purchase Policy & Warranty we can’t accept returns once an order has shipped, and there’s no sleep trial. You can change the size or model, or cancel, any time before it ships: just text John. Every 14" mattress here comes with a 10-year limited warranty; see mattress warranty explained.

Questions we hear a lot
Is a 14 inch mattress too thick?
Not for most adult beds, but it is more than many people need. A 14 inch mattress mostly adds a deeper, plusher comfort layer, which side sleepers, heavier sleepers and people who like a plush bed tend to enjoy. It is usually too thick for bunk beds and trundles, raises the bed height, and needs deep-pocket sheets.
Is a 12 inch or 14 inch mattress better?
Neither is better for everyone. Our 14 inch models are all plush or medium soft, while our 12 inch models run from plush to firm. Choose 14 inches for a deep, plush top; choose 12 inches if you want a firmer feel, a lower bed or easier-fitting sheets.
What sheets and protector fit a 14 inch mattress?
Look for deep-pocket fitted sheets, about 15 inches or deeper so the corners stay on with a protector. Our Premium Bamboo Viscose protector fits mattresses up to 16 inches, and our Essentials Bedding Bundle lists a 16 inch pocket depth. Our Terry Cloth and Quilted Cotton protectors fit only up to 11 inches.
Can a 14 inch mattress go on an adjustable base?
Yes. Every 14 inch mattress we sell says it is compatible with an adjustable base. A very thick mattress can bend a little stiffer at the fold than a 10 or 12 inch one, which is normal.
Can I return a 14 inch mattress if it is not right?
Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed from the factory, so we cannot accept returns once an order has shipped and there is no sleep trial. You can change the model or size, or cancel, any time before it ships; text John how you sleep before you order.
