Best 10-inch mattress: every 10" model we sell, compared
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. A 10" mattress is the everyday workhorse: thick enough for most adults, easy to fit with standard sheets, and usually a little easier on the budget than a 12". Here’s who 10 inches suits (and who should go thicker), how it compares with 8" and 12" at today’s prices, and every 10" mattress we sell, side by side.
The short answer
- A 10" mattress suits most average-weight adults, back sleepers, teens, guest rooms and adjustable bases. Heavier sleepers and side sleepers who want a deep, cushioned top often prefer 12" or more.
- Our 10" range is medium to medium firm. If you want plush, look at 12"; if you want truly firm, look at 8" or our firm guide (links below).
- Want coils? 10" hybrids: 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium, 10" Allureluxe Hybrid. Want all foam? 10" Rose Medium, 10" Gel Comfort Reactive, 10" EcoCore Origin, 10" ActiveAlign Copper.
- Sheets and protectors are easy. Standard fitted sheets usually fit, and all three of our mattress protectors fit a 10" mattress.
- Today: 6 ten-inch mattresses in stock, queens from $399, all with free FedEx shipping.
Is 10 inches thick enough?
For a lot of people, yes. Every mattress has a support core at the bottom (dense foam or pocketed coils) and comfort layers on top. On the 10" listings that give every layer, there’s about 2" to 5" of comfort foam over a 5" to 6" foam or coil core. That’s usually plenty for someone who doesn’t sink far into the bed.
As a rule of thumb (not a hard rule), this is how thickness tends to line up with body weight:
- Under about 130 lbs: 8" to 10" is usually plenty. See best mattress for petite and lightweight sleepers.
- About 130 to 230 lbs: 10" to 12" works for most people.
- Over about 230 lbs, or two adults sharing: 12" to 14" is usually the safer choice, so you sink in without bottoming out. See best mattress for heavier sleepers.
Sleeping position matters too: back and stomach sleepers usually do well on 10", while side sleepers who like to sink in at the shoulder and hip may want the thicker comfort layer of a 12". The full picture is in how thick should a mattress be.
8" vs 10" vs 12": today’s prices
Queen prices for every mattress we sell in each height, read live from our catalog (in-stock sizes only):
| Height | Models in stock | Queen from | Middle queen | Queen up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8" | 3 | $319 | $334 | $349 |
| 10" | 6 | $399 | $649 | $889 |
| 12" | 11 | $519 | $784 | $989 |
The ranges overlap, because materials (coils, cooling foams, edge support) move the price as much as height does. Choose 8" for kids, bunk beds, daybeds and occasional guests; see bunk bed and trundle mattresses. Choose 12" if you want more cushion on top, you’re a heavier sleeper or you share the bed; every 12" model is compared in best 12-inch mattress. - Firm: we don’t have a firm 10" in stock today; the 8" Daisy Firm and the picks in best firm mattress are the place to look.
Feel is personal, and your weight changes it: a lighter person barely compresses a medium top, a heavier person sinks further. Our mattress firmness guide explains the scale.

10" all foam or 10" hybrid?
- All foam (4 in stock today) gives a more hugging, close-conforming feel and soaks up movement, so you feel less of a partner turning over.
- Hybrid (2 in stock today) puts 5" to 6" of edge-to-edge pocketed coils under the foam. Our 10" hybrid listings describe the coils as adding support and breathability, and hybrids generally feel bouncier than all foam.
The lowest-priced 10" hybrid queen today is the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium at $699.

Pick by situation
- Lowest-priced 10" queen: 10" Rose Medium, 10" Gel Comfort Reactive (queen $399 today). More budget picks in best affordable mattress.
- Dorm or teen room (Twin XL): 10" Twin XL from 10" Gel Comfort Reactive at $269 today. See best mattress for teenagers and Twin XL adjustable base for dorms.
- Guest room used by adults: 10" is the better choice over 8" if guests stay often or for more than a weekend; see best mattress for a guest room.
- You sit on the edge a lot: listings that name a patented edge support system: 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium, 10" ActiveAlign Copper, 10" Allureluxe Hybrid.
- You like some bounce: the hybrids, or the 10" ActiveAlign Copper (queen $739 today), whose 2" reactive foam is described on the listing as having “latex-like bounce back.”
- You sleep warm: every 10" listing names a cooling feature (gel or copper-gel foam, air-channel or Air Grid base foam, or coils for airflow). The 10" Allureluxe Hybrid (queen $889 today) adds graphite cooling bands. Compare them in best cooling mattress.
- You’d like plant-based foam: the EcoCore models use a bio-based foam derived from soy, per their listings.
Sheets and protectors for a 10" mattress
Good news: this is the easy height. Standard fitted sheets usually fit mattresses up to about 12", so a 10" mattress with a thin protector on it doesn’t normally need deep-pocket sheets. And every one of our mattress protectors fits:
- The Terry Cloth and Quilted Cotton protectors list a fit up to 11" (Terry Cloth queen $34 today).
- The Premium Bamboo Viscose protector fits up to 16" and lists 5-sided spill protection (queen $69 today). It’s the one to buy if you might move up to a 12" or 14" mattress later.
Our listings recommend a protector (not required) because liquid damage doesn’t qualify for a warranty replacement. More in do you need a mattress protector and best sheets for an adjustable bed.
What to put it on
- Support: our 10" listings that include setup instructions call for a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2" apart. See what to put under a memory foam mattress.
- Adjustable base: 10" is a common thickness for one; it generally bends without much fight at the head and foot. Listings that name an adjustable base as a proper surface or say they’re compatible: 10" Gel Comfort Reactive, 10" EcoCore Origin, 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium, 10" ActiveAlign Copper, 10" Allureluxe Hybrid. Our e3 adjustable base (queen $499 today) has head and foot lift, zero gravity and a wireless remote. More in best mattress for an adjustable base.
- Bunk beds and daybeds: a 10" is usually too thick for a top bunk, whose label often allows only 6" to 8". It can work on a daybed or a lower bunk if the label allows; see bunk bed and trundle mattresses.
Delivery and the first few days
All of these ship compressed and rolled. Unwrap with scissors (the listings say never a razor blade), let it expand, and you can sleep on it the first night; full recovery can take up to 72 hours. Foam feels firmer when it’s new and cool, so give it a few weeks; see how to break in a new mattress. Rotating the mattress now and then helps it wear evenly.
Order the right one the first time
Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed straight from the factory, so per our Purchase Policy & Warranty we can’t accept returns once an order has shipped, and there’s no sleep trial. You can change the size or model, or cancel, any time before it ships: just text John. Every 10" mattress here comes with a 10-year limited warranty; see mattress warranty explained.

Questions we hear a lot
Is a 10 inch mattress thick enough for an adult?
For many adults, yes. As a rule of thumb, 10 to 12 inches works for most people between about 130 and 230 lbs, and back and stomach sleepers usually do well on 10 inches. Heavier sleepers, couples who want more cushion and side sleepers who like to sink in often prefer 12 inches or more.
Is a 10 inch or 12 inch mattress better?
Neither is better for everyone. A 12 inch mattress has room for a thicker comfort layer, which side sleepers and heavier sleepers tend to like. A 10 inch mattress often costs less and is plenty for lighter and average-weight sleepers. Feel comes from the materials, not the height.
Do I need deep pocket sheets for a 10 inch mattress?
Usually not. Standard fitted sheets usually fit mattresses up to about 12 inches, so a 10 inch mattress with a thin protector normally fits. All three of our mattress protectors fit a 10 inch mattress: the Terry Cloth and Quilted Cotton fit up to 11 inches and the Premium Bamboo Viscose fits up to 16 inches.
Can a 10 inch mattress go on an adjustable base?
Yes, 10 inches is a common thickness for an adjustable base. Most of our 10 inch listings name an adjustable base as a proper surface or say they are compatible with one. If you are unsure about a specific model, text John before you order.
Can I return a 10 inch mattress if it is not right?
Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed from the factory, so we cannot accept returns once an order has shipped and there is no sleep trial. You can change the model or size, or cancel, any time before it ships; text John how you sleep before you order.
