Hybrid vs innerspring mattress: what’s the difference, and which should you buy?

Hi, we’re John and Mimi. A lot of the people who text us are replacing a traditional spring mattress they bought years ago, and they want to know if a “hybrid” is just a fancy name for the same thing. It isn’t. Both have coils, but they’re built differently, they feel different, and they ship and set up differently. Here’s the plain comparison, plus every hybrid we sell at today’s prices.

The short answer

What is an innerspring mattress?

A traditional innerspring is the mattress most of us grew up on. Its core is a grid of steel coils wired to each other, so the whole unit works together, and many have a stiff steel border wire around the edge to hold the shape. On top there’s usually a thinner layer of padding, fiber or foam, often in a quilted or pillow top. Innerspring mattresses are usually delivered flat rather than rolled, and many are designed to sit on a matching box spring.

The upside is a bouncy, responsive feel, and you sit “on” the bed rather than sinking in. The trade-offs: when the coils are linked, movement on one side tends to travel across the bed, the thin top layer has less room to cushion, and a stiff border wire doesn’t bend well on an adjustable base. How long each type tends to last is in our how long does a mattress last guide.

What is a hybrid mattress?

A hybrid splits the job in two. Underneath is a coil layer for support and bounce. On top are foam comfort layers: memory foam, gel foam, air foam or a springier reactive foam. In our hybrids the coils are 5" to 8" tall, and the listings describe most of them as pocketed: each small spring is wrapped on its own instead of being tied into one connected unit, so one part of the mattress can give without pulling the rest along. Most of our hybrid listings say the coils reduce motion transfer and help airflow, and every hybrid we sell lists a patented edge support system along the sides.

For the layer-by-layer details of each model, see our best hybrid mattress guide. Weighing a hybrid against all foam instead? That’s our memory foam vs hybrid guide.

Switching from an innerspring: what to know

Thinking about an adjustable base?

This is one of the biggest practical differences. Every hybrid’s setup instructions list an adjustable base as a proper surface, and most of the listings say outright that the mattress is compatible with one, so you can raise the head to read or the feet to rest. A traditional innerspring with a stiff border wire usually isn’t a good match. Our e3 adjustable base (queen $499 today) has head and foot lift, a zero-gravity preset, 3 memory positions, a wireless remote and zero clearance. Questions we hear a lot

What is the difference between a hybrid and an innerspring mattress?

A traditional innerspring is mostly a unit of steel coils linked together, usually with a fairly thin padded or quilted top. A hybrid also has a coil layer, but the coils are usually individually wrapped (pocketed), with foam comfort layers such as memory foam, gel foam or air foam on top. That gives a hybrid more cushion and less motion across the bed, while an innerspring feels bouncier and firmer.

Is a hybrid mattress better than an innerspring?

It depends on what you like. A hybrid usually suits couples, side sleepers and anyone who wants an adjustable base, because pocketed coils move more independently and the foam top cushions more. A traditional innerspring suits people who specifically want a firm, springy feel with a thin top. We sell hybrids and all-foam mattresses, not traditional innersprings; a medium firm hybrid is our closest feel.

Does a hybrid mattress need a box spring?

No. The setup instructions for our hybrids call for a continuously solid surface, an adjustable base, or slats no more than 2 inches apart. An old box spring can work only if it is flat and firm, not sagging.

Can a hybrid mattress go on an adjustable base?

Yes. Every hybrid we sell lists an adjustable base as a proper surface in its setup instructions, and most of the listings say the mattress is compatible with one. A traditional innerspring with a stiff border wire usually does not bend well on an adjustable base.

Can I return a hybrid mattress if I don’t like the feel?

Our mattresses ship vacuum-compressed from the factory, so we cannot accept returns once an order has shipped and there is no sleep trial. You can change the model or size, or cancel, any time before it ships. Text John about your current mattress and he will tell you which hybrid feels closest.
