Best mattress for seniors and older adults (2026 guide)
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Some of our favorite calls come from older adults shopping for themselves, and from grown kids shopping for a mom or dad. What they want is usually simple: a bed that’s easy to get in and out of, comfortable on the hips and shoulders, and a good height to sit on. Here’s what we look for in a mattress for seniors, which of ours we’d pick, and today’s prices: same factory models, lower price than other online retailers.
A sincere note: we’re a family business, not doctors. This guide is general shopping advice, not medical advice. If someone has a health condition, a fall risk or needs help moving, ask their doctor, nurse or occupational therapist what kind of bed is safest.
The short answer
- Feel: medium firm suits most people. It supports the hips without feeling hard, and it’s easier to turn over and stand up from than a very soft bed. Side sleepers with tender shoulders or hips may prefer medium.
- A firm, stable edge makes sitting on the side of the bed to put on socks or get up feel steadier. Look for edge support in the mattress description.
- Bed height: many people like a height where they can sit on the edge with their feet flat on the floor and their knees about level with their hips. Measure before you buy.
- An adjustable base is an option, not a must. It lets you sit up to read or watch TV with real support, and our e8 High-Low Lift raises the whole bed to make standing up easier.
- Our usual picks: the 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel (medium firm, with a stable sitting edge) and the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium (medium firm pocket-coil hybrid with edge support).

Easy in and out: bed height and a stable edge
For a lot of older adults, the hardest part of bedtime is the first and last minute: sitting down on the bed and standing back up. Two things make the biggest difference.
- The right height. Your bed height is three numbers added together: the frame or legs, the foundation or base, and the mattress. A bed that’s too low means pushing up from a deep squat; one that’s too high means your feet dangle. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress you have now, and remember that a 12" mattress sits 2" higher than a 10" on the same frame.
- A stable edge. Many all-foam mattresses soften at the sides, so sitting on the edge can feel like sliding off. Several of ours list a patented edge support system in their descriptions: the 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel (listed as “a stable sitting edge”), the 10" ActiveAlign Copper and 12" ActiveAlign Copper Zoned (listed as “a stable sitting surface”), the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium, 12" Copper Gel, 12" Lavender Firm, 12" iSwitch, 12" Gel Plush, 12" EcoCore Hybrid Deluxe and both 14" hybrids.
- Not too soft. A very plush bed lets you sink in, which can make turning over and getting up take more effort. Medium to medium firm keeps you more “on” the bed.
If you’re adding an adjustable base, our how to choose an adjustable base checklist shows how to work out the finished height (leg heights, base height and mattress thickness).
Pressure relief vs. support
A good mattress for an older adult has to do two jobs at once: cushion the shoulders and hips, which press hardest into the bed when you lie on your side, and hold the hips up so they don’t sag. Too firm and those pressure points have nowhere to go; too soft and the hips sink like a hammock. That’s why medium firm is the crowd pleaser, and why side sleepers often step down to medium.
- Side sleepers: medium, with a softer top layer. A zoned mattress like the 12" ActiveAlign Copper Zoned has a comfort layer split into zones (plush cooling gel under the upper torso, plush memory foam at the hips, support foam at the head and foot) to keep the spine in a neutral position. More in our side sleeper guide.
- Back sleepers: medium firm. Our best mattress for back pain guide goes deeper on support and sleeping positions.
- Not sure what “medium firm” feels like? Our mattress firmness guide explains the whole scale, including how body weight changes the feel.
Memory foam or hybrid?
- Memory foam molds to your body and is quiet and still, so a partner getting up won’t shake the bed much. A medium firm or bouncier “reactive” foam, like our ActiveAlign models, is easier to move on than slow, sink-in foam.
- Hybrids (pocket coils under the foam) usually feel a bit more lifted and springy, sleep cooler, and make changing positions easier. Both of our EcoCore hybrids list edge-to-edge pocketed coils and a patented edge support system.
The full side-by-side is in our memory foam vs. hybrid guide.
Sleeping cool
If you or your partner wake up warm, look for cooling materials. Our copper and gel memory foams, Air Grid and Air Channel base foams, and pocket-coil hybrids are all described as cooling or breathable, and the 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel adds cooling fibers woven into the cover. Our hot sleeper guide compares them.
Couples with different needs
After many years together, two people often want different things from a bed: one runs warm, one wants it softer, one reads late. A split king is two Twin XL mattresses side by side on two Twin XL bases, the same 76" × 80" footprint as a king, so each side can have its own mattress and its own position. On the e3, the sync cable lets you control your side and your partner’s side separately, or move both together. Our best mattress for couples guide covers motion, size and firmness compromises.
Is an adjustable base worth it for seniors?
It isn’t required, but many older adults love one. Raising the head lets you sit up to read, watch TV or have morning coffee with real back support, and raising the head first can make swinging your legs over the side easier than pushing up from flat. Zero gravity raises the head and knees together for a relaxed recline. The e8 High-Low Lift goes further: the manufacturer lists a lift of up to 10" and a forward tilt of up to 10°, so you can raise the bed to sit and stand, then lower it for sleeping. Optional handrails are sold separately.

- The mattress has to bend with the base. Our foam and hybrid mattresses do; our best mattress for an adjustable base guide explains what to look for.

Delivery, setup and living with it
- Shipping is free. Our mattresses arrive compressed and rolled in a box, and most list delivery within 3 to 5 business days. A queen or king box is heavy, so plan on a family member or friend to help carry it in. The e8 High-Low Lift ships white glove and takes about 2 to 4 weeks.
- Set it up where it will live. The setup instructions say to place the mattress on its base, a solid surface or slats no more than 2" apart before opening it, then cut the plastic with scissors, never a razor blade. You can sleep on it the first night; it can take up to 72 hours to fully recover its shape. More in our mattress-in-a-box guide.
- Easier to keep clean. Most of our picks have zip-off, machine-washable covers, and a mattress protector is a good idea since liquid damage isn’t covered by the warranty.
- Rotate it head to foot every few months, as the care instructions suggest. A 10" all-foam mattress is usually lighter to turn than a thick hybrid, but this is a good job to ask for help with.
- Replacing an old bed? If yours is sagging or past about 7 to 10 years, our how long does a mattress last guide lists the signs it’s time.

Questions we hear a lot
What is the best mattress for seniors?
For most older adults, a medium firm mattress with edge support, at a bed height that makes sitting down and standing up comfortable. Medium firm supports the hips without feeling hard, and a stable edge makes sitting on the side of the bed feel steadier. Our usual picks are the 12 inch Ananda Pearl & Gel, whose edge support is listed as a stable sitting edge, and the 10 inch EcoCore Hybrid Premium.
What firmness is best for older adults?
Medium firm suits most people, because it cushions the shoulders and hips while keeping you on top of the bed, so turning over and getting up take less effort than on a very soft mattress. Side sleepers with tender shoulders or hips often prefer medium, and people who like a firm bed can choose firm. This is general shopping advice, not medical advice.
How high should a bed be for a senior?
Many people like a height where they can sit on the edge with their feet flat on the floor and their knees about level with their hips. Bed height is the frame or legs, plus the foundation or base, plus the mattress, so measure the bed you have now. A thicker mattress or taller legs raise it, and our e8 High-Low Lift base can raise the whole bed up to 10 inches. If someone has a fall risk, ask their doctor or occupational therapist what height is safest.
Is memory foam or a hybrid better for seniors?
Both can work well. Memory foam molds to the body and keeps the bed still when a partner moves; a medium firm or bouncier reactive foam is easier to move on than slow, sink-in foam. A pocket-coil hybrid usually feels more lifted and springy, sleeps cooler and makes changing positions easier. Look for edge support in either type if you sit on the side of the bed often.
Should seniors get an adjustable base or a hospital bed?
For older adults who are independent and want sitting up, reading and getting out of bed to be easier, a home adjustable base is usually the better fit, and it works with your own frame and comes in sizes couples can share. A hospital bed is care equipment for people who are bedbound or need a caregiver’s help; ask their doctor. Questions? Text John at 805-617-6878.
