Best mattress for back sleepers: firmness, support and picks
Hi, we’re John and Mimi. Back sleepers usually want a bed that holds them up without feeling like a board, and that’s exactly where medium firm lives. Here’s how firm to go for your weight, what “lower-back support” actually means inside a mattress, which of our mattresses we’d point you to, and simple tips for the pillow and the base. Prices are pulled live from our catalog, and every mattress ships brand new and factory-sealed, compressed in a box, with free FedEx shipping and a 10-year limited warranty.
The short answer
- Most back sleepers: medium firm, so your hips stay level with your shoulders and the small of your back still has something to rest on.
- Our medium firm picks: the 10" ActiveAlign Copper for bouncy foam, the 10" Gel Comfort Reactive on a budget, the 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium if you want pocket coils.
- Want zoned support? The 12" ActiveAlign Reactive Copper Zoned has a different foam under your head, upper torso and hips.
- Over about 230 lbs? Go firmer or coils: the 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials (medium firm, 7" coils) or the 12" Lavender Firm.
- Use a medium-height pillow and try a small pillow under your knees.
Why back sleepers do best on medium firm
On your back, your weight is spread over a wide area, but your hips are still the heaviest part. If the mattress is too soft, the hips sink and your spine curves like a hammock. If it’s too firm, there’s a gap under the small of your back and your shoulders and tailbone take all the pressure. Medium firm sits in between: supportive underneath, with a little cushion on top that fills in the curve of your lower back. That’s why the usual advice in our mattress firmness guide is medium firm for back, firm for stomach and medium soft to medium for side sleepers.
How firm? It depends on your weight
A mattress feels softer the more you weigh, because you press further into it. Use this as a starting point:
| Your weight | Aim for | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 130 lbs | Medium, or a softer-leaning medium firm (you don’t sink far, so firm can feel hard) | 12" Copper (medium), 10" Rose (medium), 10" EcoCore Origin; see petite sleepers |
| About 130–230 lbs | Medium firm | 10" ActiveAlign Copper, 10" Gel Comfort Reactive, 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium, 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel |
| Over about 230 lbs | Medium firm with pocket coils, or firm | 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials, 12" Lavender Firm; see heavier sleepers |
What “lower-back support” means inside a mattress
There’s no magic lumbar layer in most mattresses. Support for a back sleeper comes from two things: a firm enough core so the hips don’t sink, and a comfort layer on top that’s thick enough to fill the gap under the small of your back. Here’s how that’s built in each mattress we’d suggest for back sleepers, straight from the listings:
| Mattress | Feel | On top | Underneath |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10" ActiveAlign Copper | Medium firm | 1" copper-gel memory foam, 2" Reactive Foam with “latex-like bounce back” | 2" support foam, 5" Air Grid, edge support |
| 12" ActiveAlign Zoned | Medium | 2" Reactive Foam, 1" copper-gel memory foam | 2" zoned layer (support foam at head and foot, plush cooling gel at the upper torso, plush memory foam at the hips), 7" Air Grid, edge support |
| 10" Gel Comfort Reactive | Medium firm | Gel-infused Air Memory Foam, quilted cover | Air Channel base foam |
| 10" EcoCore Origin | Medium firm | 2" soy-based Air Foam, 2" plush Air Ridge foam | 6" Air Channel base |
| 12" Ananda Pearl & Gel | Medium firm | 2" Pearl & Gel memory foam, 1" comfort layer | 2" transition foam, 7" Air Grid, edge support |
| 10" EcoCore Hybrid Premium | Medium firm | 2" soy-based Air Foam, 1" plush gel memory foam | 6" edge-to-edge pocketed coils, 1" base foam, edge support |
| 10" Allureluxe Hybrid Advanced | Medium firm | 1" bamboo charcoal memory foam with graphite Lumi Bands, 1" plush gel memory foam | 2" Air Grid, 5" edge-to-edge pocketed coils, 1" base foam |
| 12" Sofinity Hybrid Essentials | Medium firm | 2" Sofinity Foam, quilted Tencel cover | 7" foam-encased pocketed coils, edge support |
The zoned model is the only one we sell where the comfort layer changes along the length of the bed; how that works is in our zoned copper gel mattress guide. For back sleepers we usually skip our plush models (the 12" Essentials Plush, 12" Gel Plush and 14" plush models): they’re lovely for side sleepers but let the hips sink. Thickness-wise, 10" to 12" suits most adult back sleepers; see how thick should a mattress be.

Memory foam or hybrid for a back sleeper?
- Memory foam (Ananda Pearl & Gel, EcoCore Origin, Gel Comfort Reactive) fills in the curve of your lower back closely and keeps the bed quiet and still.
- Reactive foam (10" ActiveAlign Copper, 12" ActiveAlign Zoned) is still foam, but with a quicker bounce-back, so you feel held up rather than slowly sinking in.
- A hybrid (EcoCore Hybrid Premium, Allureluxe Hybrid Advanced, Sofinity Hybrid Essentials) adds push-back from pocketed coils, which heavier back sleepers often like, and leaves more room for air to move.
The full comparison is in memory foam vs hybrid mattress. If you run warm, see best cooling mattress.
Pillow tips for back sleepers
- Go medium height. Too tall pushes your chin toward your chest; too flat lets your head tip back. From our listings: the Essentials Dual Air-Foam Pillow is 4" (28" × 16"), the Cryo-Chill Phase Change Pillow has a 4.5" loft, and the Low Profile Memory Foam Pillow for Stomach & Back Sleepers is 2.95" if you like it low or you’re petite. More in how to choose a pillow.
- A small pillow under the knees takes pressure off the lower back for many back sleepers. The zero gravity position on an adjustable base does the same thing with one button.
Adjustable bases and back sleepers
For a back sleeper, an adjustable base isn’t just for reading in bed; it can change how you sleep. Many back sleepers like a slight raise under the knees, or the zero gravity preset, which lifts the head and knees together; see zero gravity bed position. If you want something for the small of your back, the e7 Lumbar base adds a separate lumbar lift plus pillow tilt, zero gravity and anti-snore presets. The e3 and e4 Premium both have a zero gravity preset, and the e4 Premium adds an anti-snore preset and massage. All of the mattresses above work on an adjustable base; see best mattress for an adjustable bed. Not using one? Our listings call for a continuously solid surface or slats no more than 2 inches apart, and a sagging base makes any mattress feel too soft (what to put under a memory foam mattress).
Snoring on your back?
Some people snore more on their back. Raising the head a little is a common thing to try, and that’s what the anti-snore preset on our e4 Premium and e7 Lumbar bases does with one button; more in adjustable bed for acid reflux and snoring. Loud or regular snoring is worth mentioning to your doctor.
Back sleeper sharing with a side sleeper?
- One mattress: medium firm is the usual middle ground. The 12" iSwitch Flippable has a medium firm side and a medium soft side, so you can try both. See best mattress for combination sleepers.
- Two feels: a split king is two Twin XL mattresses side by side, so each of you picks your own, and on two adjustable bases your side can sit in zero gravity while theirs stays flat. See split king for couples and best mattress for couples.
Signs your mattress isn’t right for back sleeping
- Too soft: your hips feel lower than your shoulders, you feel “in a hole,” or you wake up stiff in the lower back and it eases once you’re moving.
- Too firm: you can slide a hand easily under the small of your back, or your tailbone and shoulder blades feel sore.
- Worn out: there’s a visible dip where you sleep. Check the base first, then see how to fix a sagging mattress and how long does a mattress last.
A new mattress can feel firmer for the first few weeks while it breaks in; see how to break in a new mattress. Shopping because your back already hurts? Our best mattress for back pain guide covers every sleeping position.

Questions we hear a lot
What firmness is best for back sleepers?
Medium firm suits most back sleepers: firm enough underneath that the hips do not sink, with a little cushion on top that fills the curve of the lower back. Under about 130 lbs, medium can feel better; over about 230 lbs, go firmer or choose pocket coils.
What is the best mattress for back sleepers?
Our first pick is the 10 inch ActiveAlign Reactive Copper (medium firm). On a budget, the 10 inch Gel Comfort Reactive. If you want pocket coils, the 10 inch EcoCore Hybrid Premium, and if you want zoned support, the 12 inch ActiveAlign Reactive Copper Zoned.
Is memory foam good for back sleepers?
Yes, if it is medium firm rather than plush. Memory foam fills in the curve of the lower back closely. Reactive foam bounces back faster if you do not like the slow sink, and a hybrid adds push-back from coils, which heavier back sleepers often like.
What pillow should a back sleeper use?
A medium-height pillow, so your chin is not pushed toward your chest and your head does not tip back. Our Essentials Dual Air-Foam Pillow is 4 inches and the Cryo-Chill Phase Change Pillow has a 4.5 inch loft; the Low Profile pillow at 2.95 inches suits back sleepers who like it low. A small pillow under the knees also helps many back sleepers.
Do back sleepers need an adjustable base?
No, but many like one. The zero gravity preset raises the head and knees together, and our e7 Lumbar base adds a separate lumbar lift. The e4 Premium and e7 also have an anti-snore preset that raises the head a little. All of our mattresses work on an adjustable base.
